1996 was an incredible year for hip hop. On July 2, 1996, De La Soul dropped Stakes Is High. It was the 4th album from the trio from Long Island. This album was critically acclaimed for its production and lyricism. It served as a message to the decline that rap music began to face in the mid 90s. The album also had guest features from Zhane, Common and Mos Def

who's the BEST hip hop group ever???

Group- any collection or assemblage of persons or things

That is the definition of a group...according to the dictionary.

As we celebrate hip hop week, I am reminded that we've seen our share of great groups. I have always had a great deal of respect for hip hop duos/groups. They have helped mold and shape the hip hop culture. You gotta respect them even more. I imagine that it's hard to stand out as an MC when you're in a group. Sometimes your skills can be overlooked when you're in a group.

Just to name a few!

But if I had to pick ONE group as the best of all time...I'd say...

PUBLIC ENEMY

And that's hard to say because the groups that I just mentioned are great groups. But when I measure their impact on the culture, lyrics, and album content. I gotta say PE.

Sometimes people throw these words out when they speak of others. The descriptions are vastly unfounded. Not this time. These words accurately describe the late James Yancey...aka J Dilla aka Jay Dee.

He was one of the music industry's most influential hip-hop artists, working for big-name acts like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes and Common. J Dilla became highly regarded, most notably for the production of critically acclaimed albums by Common, Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Janet Jackson, and Erykah Badu. He was a member of Slum Village and produced their acclaimed debut album Fan-Tas-Tic (Vol. 1) and their follow-up Fantastic, Vol. 2.

Jay Dee was born on February 7, 1974. He lived for...and bled for hip hop. Unfortunately, J Dilla died from lupus on February 10, 2006, three days after his 32nd birthday and the release of his final album Donuts. He was taken from us far too soon. He was a gift to hip hop. Long before there was a Kanye West, there was J Dilla. I miss him and his music. He lives on.
