Quiet Storm

"maybe it's just me but i probably should pay attention to these tornado warnings that they are showing on tv. growing up in s carolina, i was so used to them that it doesn't have the same effect. i've never seen a tornado...and i don't plan on seeing one. tornados rarely strike heavily populated metro areas. i'm buggin at how a tornado warning can dominate the first 20 mins of a local newscast"

Those were my words. A week ago. I don't feel that way anymore. As many of you know, a devastating tornado ripped threw downtown Atlanta, Ga on Friday night. Many of you have seen the destruction that was left behind. While it may have only lasted 1 minute, it has caused damage of an estimated 250 million dollaz. What many of you don't know...I was almost in the middle of it. I don't live downtown but that's where I love to hang out. On Friday night, I had tickets to see the Atlanta Hawks play the LA Clippers. I was going to go to the game. But late Friday afternoon, I started feeling funny. I felt tired all of a sudden. And something told me to stay at the crib. What? Stay at the crib on a Friday night and miss the Hawks game? Are you crazy? Those were my thoughts. But something told me that I'd be better off at the crib. I had no idea that bad weather was headed our way. I didn't even know that it was gonna rain. You know bruthas don't go out when its raining. LOL

The pictures that you see above are from the area around the CNN Center, Centennial Olympic Park, Ga Dome (where the SEC was holding its conference b-ball tournament), and Phillps Arena (where I would have been for the Hawks game). At the time that this tornado struck would have been about the SAME time that I would have been leaving the Hawks game. Can you imagine walking out to your car and finding a billboard laying on top of it? Luckily, I listened to the voice of reason and stayed at home.

Thank you for call the calls, emails, and text msgs. Me and the fam are fine. The 12estate was spared. LOL

Crazy how people had no idea that it was coming... thanks for alerting me so I could make sure my fam down there was alright.

But yeah, blacks folks dont come out in the rain, but black folks usually wont miss a game of any kind either...LOL

Glad to see that there were no fatalities...and that you and the fam are OK.

and Atlanta ain't looking so sweet for me to move there next year if mess like this is happening. I will take a snowstorm in ny for 100 Alex, over a damn tornado anyday.

As I said in my blog..you have to listen to those warnings. That wasn't just your intuition. That was God baby boy. He always gives you an out. It is up to you whether you take heed and listen. Glad you are o.k.

Yo son, I woke up and had to move my family around in the house off the second floor Friday night. I was there 1/2 sleep and the news flashed that the storm was coming right down I20. the started mentioning streets near where I live so, I got the kids up just in case. Luckily it jumped over my neighborhood.

However, what nobody mentions, a second wave of storms came through Saturday morning and a third on Saturday afternoon. The one Saturday afternoon dropped golf ball sized hail all over my neighborhood. Countless cars were damaged and house windows knocked out. Again, I was lucky enough to move my truck into the garage like 10 minutes before the hail came. My neighbors weren't so lucky. A lot of damage.

Praise God that you and yours were not hurt. Glad you were spared my brother!

that's so nuts! don't you love when you heed "voice" and the reasoning is revealed later? i was talking to my friend on the phone that night and i could hear the thunder. neither of us knew about the tornado coming but i was like...maybe we should get off of the phone. it sounded crazy!

glad you and the fam are good. a tornado hit my high school once and killed my friend's father. it was such a freak accident and anything can happen in a tornado cuz they are so random...

Jazzy said...

WOW...I heard about the tornadoe from another blogger and I didn't really pay it any mind. Seeing the pictures, all I can do is keep saying "WOW"!!!

That inner voice has saved my azz on more than one ocassion...glad you listened to yours!

I thank God that you and your family are alive, well, and healthy. I am sure this event has caused you to cherish your family even more.

@ Eb the Celeb
There was no warning. There was a severe thunderstorm warning. They said that there was a 2% chance of this ever happening. Two percent! Nobody knew. And you'd think that you'd be safer in a metropolitan area. There are more structures and less room for air masses to come together.

You can still move here. The next tornado won't happen for another 100 years. LOL

@ Mizrepresent
Glad to see that you are ok as well. Btw...Thanks for the tag.

@ LRenee
Thanks for your concern. I told your husband yesterday to tell you that we were ok. But you know how his memory is...

@ Jaded NYer
Global warming ain't no joke. Wonder how hot it's gonna be this summer?

@ dejanae
Me too!!!

@ Brad
That round of storms on Saturday was CRAZY. Rain, wind, hail, a tornado watch that last ALL DAY.

We were at my son's b-ball game. We were about to leave when they told us that a tornado was headed our way. They stopped the games and huddled everybody in the locker rooms. For about 2 mins, the winds were blowing real hard and it was raining like crazy. Then, it passed. When we left, it was barely raining. By the time that we got home, the sun was out and it was 78 degrees!!! WTF??? I've never seen anything like this.

@ Sojourner G
That is very true, bruh

@ PCD
You are right. Tornadoes are so rare and random. And they can literally come from nowhere. Unlike a hurricane when you can get a warning, these storms are unpredictable to say the least. And you can't run from them.

@ Opinionated Diva
Isn't it nice to "listen" for a change? LOL

@ Queen of my Castle
You are correct! I need them just as much as they need me.

btw...great post today. i had to comment on that one. LOL.

I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are doing well. Your experience just goes to show that people should always listen to that inner voice -- and never question it!

God spoke to you and luckily you listened!! :-)

Kyle & Brad
Glad your both okay.
Wild stuff ! You never know.

Don said...

Yeah, I saw that on TV the other day. That was wild. A force of nature is a mugg, and will probably end the world one day. Okay, I digress.

That's good that you and your fam are safe. We were watching the SEC tournament when it hit the building. We were mad until we saw the aftermath of the torando. $250 mil in damage? That's real.

TravelDiva said...

Wow. That is so crazy!!!

I used to laugh at the end of the world talk. Those new pics make you think. LOL

Between the GA Dome and Phillips Arena, there were about 40,000 people. Luckily, no one was killed.

the jaded nyer you are right about Global Warming its no joke. Unfortunately a person with keep ignoring the warning signs until it’s too late. A TORNADO IN BROOKLYN THAT’S TOO SCARY!!!!!!!! I lived in Brooklyn 16 years ago and never had a tornado watch or warning.
K12 thank GOD you listened when he whispered. As I told you in my previous blog, when they say “tornado watch” I seek immediate shelter!
Brad I don’t know you personally but I am glad that you and the fam are fine.
