save your war stories for private ryan

Florence, South Carolina

That's where I'm from.

It's a "big town" that is geographically located as the midway point between Miami and New York. Growing up, it was a great place to live. It was a place where I could be a kid. It wasn't dangerous. It was easy living. For the most part, blacks and whites got along. It was also a place were it was common to see successful black men who were active in the community. We were your typical middle class family.

Everybody lived like that, right?

Wrong!

I wasn't naive enough to think that everybody lived like those of us who grew up in Florence. My experience growing up was normal to me but wasn't typical.

Or was it?

As I grew older, I learned about the bruthas and sistas across this country who grew up on hard times. Many of them grew up in poverty. They grew up in the crime/drug infested neighborhoods. Some even grew up in areas where they dealt with gangs. Was I shocked to learn this? No...I always knew that there was a world outside of Florence. I had traveled and had seen a lot.

I think I got confused when the crime/drug infested/gang related/gun violence culture became solely...all of black culture. When did it happen? I dunno? Was it with the explosion of rap music (yeah...let's blame rap...lol)? It just seemed like overnight...being from the hood/slum/ghetto was the story of every black person. Especially black men. You were considered HARD if you grew up in the hood. Hmmm. Interesting concept that I couldn't get into.

Then you had those who had the war stories. You know...the ones who talked about how the grew up mired in a life of crime. The ones who sold drugs like Tony Montana. The ones who shot at more people than John Rambo. The ones who did more time in jail than Nelson Mandela.

Hmmm

The last time that I checked...the issues of cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and Atlanta...were the same issues in that little place called Florence. Only to a lesser degree. In a town that has a urban population of 90,000 (it was far less than that when I was there), it has the same issues with crime, drugs, guns, and gangs (the mere thought of gangs in Florence makes me laugh).

Life is a struggle. No matter where you come from. While your experiences help your growth, they don't define you. There's no need to believe that we all grew up the same way. We didn't. We are all different and that's what's great about us.

So to those who are concerned with perpetuating stories about how hard your life was...the drugs that you sold...the time that you did in jail...the hood you grew up in...the homies that died in your arms...save your war stories for Private Ryan

u name it

A month from now, my family will welcome it's newest member...

It's a boy...

Anutha boy...

We're excited...

I can't wait for the lil fella to get here.

I hope he's healthy.

I'm excited about having my second nephew...

Oh...don't get it twisted. I'm sure that the first lines may have made you think that I was having another child! LOL! Nah, we're done and very content with our 3 soldiers. Trust me!

The newest edition will be named Braydon. He'll have an older sister (Taylor) and an older brother (Tyler). I asked my brother why he and my sister in law chose that name. I can't remember the answer but he liked it. I do, too. We named our sons...Deion, Kameron, and Brandon. As you can see, both me and my brother have given our children very common names. I've never been a fan of exotic names. I don't knock those who have exotic names because they can't help it. However, I do scratch my head when I hear some names that today's parents have given to their kids...like JaMarkwon for example.

I guess in '72 you could say that the name Kyle was exotic. I guess? It was rare. My mom named me that because she had a co-worker, who happened to be white, and she liked the name. I found the name to be very rare growing up. I had only met 5 people named Kyle through my school years. And they were all white. When I got to college, I met 2 black people named Kyle (a dude and a chick). Nevertheless, I like name. Always have.

kyle- a narrow channel of water between two islands or between an island and the mainland; a strait or sound. (Scotish/Gaelic)

What about you?

Does your name have a meaning? (*first names only...some of you may be on a WANTED list...lol*)

If you have kids...what are their names? Do they have a meaning? If you DON'T have kids, what would you name the kids that you plan to have?

Ice Cube (F**k tha Police)

I was reading my boy Crecks post about his recent run in with the boys in blue. It's unfortunate that it happened to him. It's even more unfortunate that it happened...at all! His post made me think about all the times that I've been pulled over for NO reason. It's been at LEAST 10 times. I know it happened at LEAST4 times when I was living in Cobb County (NW Atlanta suburb). I remember being pulled over and the officer asking me "why did I have my hat on backwards?" Another time, I had my car (Nissan Sentra) searched and the officer asked me if I had any drugs or guns on me? No officer...I left em at my apartment with the prostitutes and prescription meds. After reading his post, I decided to repost a blog that I wrote in 2008...

Let me start by saying that I don't like cops. I hate to generalize it but I don't like em. I don't feel safe around them, they've never been around when I've needed them, and I haven't met one nice cop. That said...here's my story

I was in New Orleans about 10 years ago on a business trip. My co-worker and I decided to go to Bourbon Street. If you've ever been to N.O. you know that ANYTHING goes on Bourbon Street. We hung out and had a good time and then decided to head back to our hotel. Before we got in the car, my co-worker, who is white, was complaining about his feet that were sore from walking. When we got in the car, he decides to take his shoes off to "rest his dogs." As he was bending over to remove his shoes, I see a police car behind us that throws on the blue lights. We were only a block away from Bourbon Street and we weren't drunk so I dunno why we were being pulled over. The cops get out with their GUNS DRAWN!!! They are yelling at us to get outta the car. They make us stand in front of the running car with our hands on the hood of the car. Apparently, there must be some law about a young black dude and a white dude hangin together...because they thought we had drugs on us. They asked my co-worker why was he bending over...was he trying to hide some drugs? Drugs? You could get ANY drug that you wanted just a block away on Bourbon Street!!!

When my co-worker advised him that he was removing his shoe (as evidence he pointed to his untied shoes), they threatened us. It was a black cop and a white cop. The black cop said "why are you two together?" We explained but the didn't listen. They proceeded to search my car (illegally). We asked could we take our hands off the HOT hood of the car. The black cop said "No. And you better not run. If you move, I'll put a bullet in your back!!" I couldn't believe it. I looked at the white cop and he was cool. He was the one who called off the black cop from going through my trunk and suitcase. My co-worker and I gathered our composure and got back in the car. We were furious and stunned!! We just sat there for about 5 mins before we left. We drove up the street and the SAME cops had pulled over a car full of Mexicans. Wow! I wonder what rule did they break? F@#% the police!

Phat Phat, uh
Ain't nothing wrong with big broads
Phat Phat

It's a sure bet
When I stare into your dark browns I get
Overwhelmed, overjoyed, overstep
My bounds, on your touchy subject
Your weight, your shape's not what I date
It's you, my crew don't mind it thick
Every woman ain't a video chick
Or runway model anorexic
I love what I can hold and grab on
So if you burn it off then keep the flab on
We gonna stay gettin our collab on
Girl we gonna stay gettin our collab on
We gonna stay gettin our collab on

Posdnuos from De La Soul (Baby Phat)

For those of you who aren't familiar with the song...this is De La Soul's tribute to the thick sistas. You know...the ones who are not too big but not too small. You know...the ones who has the desire to drop 15 pounds. Those are the sistas who will hit the elliptical machine for 30 mins...then do anutha 30 on the treadmill. She is that sista that is still carrying just a little bit of that weight from a few years ago. She wants the bust size but she still wants to be able to get into those jeans. She might even be the one who is hating on Tamika, who is a size 4 but complains that she is "too big". LOL

Summer is right around the corner. When it gets hot, you gotta come outta those clothes! Bottom line. LOL. Spring is almost here for most of us. And I KNOW that we are all headed to the gym b/c I have a hard time finding a parking spot.

Women can sometimes be very critical of themselves because they are constantly comparing themselves to how they USED to look!
Sooooo, what are YOU doing to lose, gain, or maintain your weight???

unbelievable

Live from Bedford-Stuyverson, the livest one
Representin BK to the fullest

Notorious B.I.G aka Biggie Smalls (Unbelievable)

I remember the first time I heard Biggie was on the Dolly My Baby track by Supercat. I remember borrowing the tape from my teammate Bruce when we were in college. I remember being moved by Biggie's verse. I kept playing the tape (yes...I said tape) over and over. We were getting ready to play a game and I told Bruce that I'd give him the tape back after the game.

I didn't.

He asked for it later that week at practice. I told him that I'd give it to him later when we got back to the dorm.

I didn't.

I had no intention on giving him back the tape. I had become a fan. By the time Biggie's first cd, Ready to Die, was set to debut...I had rocked Bruce's tape so much until it popped. When Ready to Die came out, I bought the cd and never replaced Bruce's tape.

To say that I was a HUGE Biggie fan is an understatement. Biggie was my dude. I think he was a great MC who was on the cusp of being a MEGASTAR before his life was tragically taken from us...13 yrs ago today.

We miss you, Biggie!

Any favorite Biggie memories or songs?

*Friends
How many of us have them?
Friends
Ones we can depend on
Friends
How many of us have them?
Friends
Before we go any further, lets be
Friends*

Is a word we use everyday
Most the time we use it in the wrong way
Now you can look the word up, again and again
But the dictionary doesnt know the meaning of friends

And if you ask me, you know, I couldnt be much help
Because A friend is somebody you judge for yourself
Some are ok, and they treat you real cool
But some mistake kindness for bein a fool

We like to be with some, because they're funny
Others come around when they need some money
Some you grew up with, around the way
And you're still real close too this very day

Homeboys through the Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall
And then there's some we wish we never knew at all
And this list goes on, again and again
But these are the people that we call friends

Friends (Whodini)

This is one of my favorite songs from back in the day. At the time that it came out in 1984, I really didn't know the significance of what it means to be a friend.

I pride myself on being a great friend to many. I am a friend to many of you who read this blog. Friendships are important. If you ever hear somebody tell you that they don't need any friends...they are lying! We all need at least one friend.

Unlike most people, I don't have one best friend. I have my crew. My crew is my best friend. Everybody in my crew is like a brother/sister. Everybody can't be in the crew. And if you have to ask if you're in the crew...then you probably aint! But I have a ton of friends. And I have even more associates. And I like that.

What about you?

Do you have a lot of friends? Do you have more associates?

Do you have ONE friend?

Do your friends remind you of this verse?

Ladies...how would you feel if you went to Victoria Secrets and paid $50 for a great pair of painties. However, the painties had been USED and worn before but you thought that they were new.

Think it doesn't happen???

Think again!

NBC goes undercover and blows the lid on some of the places where you shop. You'll be surprised to find that some places sell USED and stained painties. Wow!!!

c.r.e.a.m

Sometimes I wish people thought like me.

Not everybody.

But some people.

Peep this conversation that I had at work with a co-worker.

Her : Kyle, look at this guy's information (as she points to her computer screen). This guy makes $12,500 per month but he's buying this house that only costs $180,000.

Me : Only?

Her : Yeah. That's 150k a year. Look at his credit. He doesn't have much credit. He could afford a more expensive house.

Me : Yeah, he could. Maybe he doesn't want to overextend himself financially? He's keeping his debt to a minimum. I understand it.

Her : Not me. That's just stupid. I would get a bigger, more expensive house. He can afford it.

Me : You know what...that might have been the dumbest thing I've heard all day. Just because he can afford it doesn't mean that he should buy it. People have to get past that mentality. Look at his profile. He's an executive at GM. You never know what may happen with that company or any company. I'm sure his severance would be nice but he's being smart. He's making a good business decision. You never know what his situation is. Why jump into a ton of debt if you don't have to? We're in a recession. You have to be smart about what you spend your money on. And if he found a cheaper house, why not get it?

We're both mortgage underwriters. We have more than 10 yrs of experience. Right now, we're looking at corporate purchase relocations. These are loans where people who work for corporations and are being relocated by their companies. For example, Jon works for Glaxosmith Kline in Durham, NC. He gets a promotion and they want him to move to Reno, NV. It will be up to him to find a home in Reno and he'd have to qualify. The loan file would come to me and I'd approve it.

My point to my co-worker is this...we all have to be smart about how we spend our money. The dude who's credit profile that we were talking about only had one small credit card. No car payment. No loans. So, he is able to invest/save almost all of his money. As we emerge from this recession, I think it's important to be mindful about what we spend our money on. I'm not saying that we shouldn't want the finer things in life. Who doesn't? Foreclosures and unemployment is at an all time high. Companies are going under. Financially, the country is at rock bottom. It'll be some time before we dig ourselves out of this hole. That being said, be smart about the debt that you assume. Be mindful about what you spend your money on.

Don't go all out...just because you can afford to.

tales of a 7th grade nothing

Social media works

Well...most of the time it does.

I am a self proclaimed "social media mogul." From blogger to twitter to facebook to blackberry messenger...I enjoy it all. I love connecting with people. It has become a big part of what I do. As a married, father of 3...I understand my limitations. I keep it friendly with everybody. However, I understand that everybody doesn't have the same intentions.

That said...

Peep this Facebook conversation that I recently had with a woman who I went to elementary school with. The woman sent me a friend request. I accepted it. I posted on her wall something brief like... "Hello ____ ! How are you doing? It's been a minute. Hope all is well. Take care."

Instead of posting on my wall, she sent me a message in my inbox. Here is the convo...

Her: How are you?

Me : I'm gooooood! I can't complain. How have you been?

Her : I been Bless by God Just Waiting on That new Husband and you

Me : Waiting on a new husband? Nothing wrong with that! I hope it happens for you sooner than later :)

All is well. I'm grown now. LOL. I married (9yrs) my college sweetheart and we have 3 sons (10, 7, 3) and we live in Atlanta. I've been here about 14 yrs. Life is good. I can't complain. I still get home from time to time. My parents are there and I love going home

*** I felt the need to put this out there at this point b/c I could see where this was going. LOL ***

Her : Thats Of blessing to know that you is still holding on no matter what.My husband got 25 years up the road for drugs .so he told me to go on with my like.I did wanted to wait on him but he said no don't do that.

Me : Wow! Sorry to hear that. At least he told you not to wait for him. It says alot about you the fact that you wanted to wait for him.

Her : Yes it does but the problem is i dont want to move on its been about 2years now

Me : Wow. I can dig that. That's true love and dedication. But at some point in time...you have to live your life

Her : Yes i will one day. When god seen him looking for me i will

Me : That's true

Her : So i see that you is tired up a little. You is a good person to talk to .If it not a problem can we talk on the phone sometime because you can't talk to everybody about things no more.

Me : Sorry bout that. I was writing and got side tracked. Thank you. Some people say that I'm easy to talk to so I appreciate the compliment

*** peep how I avoided the question...I'm such a nice guy. I really could have told her to kick rocks at this point. ***

Her : Ok so is it ok for us to chat over the phone

Me : Nah. You can email me. That's easier for me

*** Obviously this is a lie. I'll give anybody my number. Hell, most of you who are reading this have my number! LOL ***

Her : Ok if you say so and i am not good with texting

Me : Cool!

Her : I wish that i could here your voice just ones

*** I don't respond. By this time I'm too busy laughing ***

Then, she emails me again 10 mins later...

Her : You make me smile. Why I can't get the number

Me : It's nothing personal. I don't give my number out. I just don't. I'm a happily married man and I choose not to do that. It cuts down on confusion. Sometimes words...phrases...can be easily misconstrued. I don't need that in my life. Everybody doesn't have your best interest at heart. Why give my number out...would I want my wife doing the same? Nope. You're a woman, so I know that you can appreciate that. Like I said, it's nothing personal. Emails is how I communicate with most people. I know you understand that

Her : Yes i do Its all good sweetie

*** By this time, I'm dying laughing and telling my friends on twitter about it. I can't figure out why this woman is going in like this. I had not seen her since we were 12. And she was 8 months PREGNANT at the time from a 23 yr old man! I shouldn't be laughing at this time...but I'm rollin ***

Then she emails me 5 mins later

Her : your or going to come to Florence SC and let me see you and make you laugh and go out for lunch or something like that

*** I'm in tears on the floor laughing. I don't even respond ***

I guess she got the picture. I think SHE deleted ME as her Facebook friend. LOL

The next time I have a stalker, please let her be able to spell.

Oh yeah...and can I get a fine stalker and not one that looks like somebody's grandmother??? Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

random thoughts...

Another football season has come and gone. I'm sure gonna miss it. Football is my first love!

The older I get, the more I appreciate jazz music

I think we all should take a day to scroll through the address book in your phone and call somebody whom you haven't spoken to in months

And while you're scrolling, if you come across a number that you haven't called since you put it in your phone, you prolly should delete it.

Is it just me or does anybody else watch the Winter Olympics just to see somebody fall down?

Anybody who knows anything about football knows that the interception that Peyton Manning threw in the Super Bowl was HIS fault. You can't defend that and you can't defend Manning. I'm sorry.

Brandon told me the other day..."Your name is not Kyle...it's Daddy!"

Dick Cheney was on tv talking about "there's gonna be another attack on America." Well, we endured 8 yrs of bs...I wonder if that's what he was talking about?

I'm not an Obama apologist. I'm gonna hold his feet to the fire, too. But you can't expect the man to work miracles in a year.

Errrrybody and their momma is a Saints fan now? Gimme a break!

Raise your hand if you've made the realization that you know more at work than the person who manages or supervises you...

Call it a play on words but I never call somebody my boss when discussing work. You could be my supervisor or my manager. You'll never be my boss.

Ipad? Blah. Iphone? Blah. I aint feelin it.

Shoutout to everybody who's been listening to my show on Blog Talk Radio every Wed night @ 10pm est. I appreciate the love!

Remember when Space Shuttle flights were big news?

Don't forget about Haiti. They will need our help long after the networks deem that it's no longer a story. Give and continue to give.

The new Sade cd dropped last week. Anybody copped it? Thumbz up or down?

Trust me when I tell you...all black people can't dance! And I know some white people who have rhythm and can dance!

I'm sure that most of us are tired of seeing snow...but it looked good at my house. And the boys enjoyed it! (front and back yard)

Love is...

Who is usually the first one to get cold feet in a relationship as things turn serious...a man or a woman?

If a dude is a self proclaimed "momma's boy", when he gets married...does his mom come before his wife? If so...why?

Does the dude who made "Pants on the Ground" know that he lost a ton of money by NOT copyrighting that?

Guilty pleasure...The Pepa Show

Looking forward to kickin it with the Crew in Charlotte for the CIAA Tournament. We're going long! I'ma be like Randy Moss on a fade route...Wide Open! Hahahaha!

You know who I have the hardest time shopping for??? Me! I rarely buy stuff for myself

I did buy a jacket that was $65 but got it on "sale" for $12. Now that's a "sale". *sarcastic*

I really shouldn't have to stare at you to figure if you're a woman or not.

I really wanna take piano lessons.

I see you Mike Vick. Good to see you back in the League. You'll be somewhere else next year. Also, it's good to see that BET hasn't effed up your show!

Can't wait for the Boondocks to come back on tv! That's my show!

Valentine's Day!

Is it a holiday for lovers?

Is it a holiday for suckers?

You be the judge...

Valentine's Day is the holiday for love. Holiday? When did it become a holiday? My first memory of Valentine's came when I was in the 3rd grade. I had to give candy to my classmates (including the dudes) and exchange cards with the girls. Ironically, I had 2 special cards that were gonna go to my 2 Valentines...Catina & Carolyn, who were best friends...LOL.

Back then, Valentine's Day was fun because you would find out the girls in your class who liked you.

Nowadays, Valentine's Day ain't the same.

I mean, there is still a girl in my life who gets a card. And my mom still gets a card.

But society has commercialized the day so much that people who don't have Valentine's are made to feel bad.

Maybe we're just too old now and things ain't what they used to be.

Or maybe...people have turned something that used to be special into a money makin' venture.

Lovers or suckaz? I dunno.

Enjoy the "holiday" folks. LOL

tatt it up!

Do you know the profession where 91% of its employees has tattoos??

Take a guess...

Yep! The NBA!!!

I came across this random stat the other day. And later that night I watched a game that featured the Denver Nuggets. It seems like EVERYBODY on the team has at least ONE tattoo!

I don't think the head coach does. But I wouldn't be surprised if he did. They might be the most tatted up team in the NBA.

JR Smith

Chris "Birdman" Andersen

Kenyon Martin

Carmelo Anthony

The more I watched these cats, I realized that that I'm never gonna get a tattoo. I went through my stage of wanting one. I don't knock those who do. I was supposed to get one when I was in college. But it didn't happen. I may get one...one day. But it'll be ONE. I can't look like this. I wonder what these dudes will look like at 40 yrs old? 50 yrs old?
What about you?
Got any tats?
If so, where and how many?
