PODCAST: 9 good albums...

I saw this posted on Instagram the other day by Questlove from The Roots. It's simple...you have to pick #NineGoodAlbums that "built" me. The albums must be dope and flawless. Instead of posting a picture on IG, I decided to make it a podcast. Simple, right? Not really...as this was difficult. Here are my 9 Good Albums. Listen to the podcast and tell me yours...

• Songs In The Key of Life - Stevie Wonder
• Purple Rain - Prince & the Revolution
• Illmatic - NaS
• Paid In Full - Eric B & Rakim
• Midnight Marauders - A Tribe Called Quest
• My Life - Mary J Blige
• Illadelph halflife - The Roots
• It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
• Raising Hell - Run DMC

PODCAST: It Was Written...20 Years Later

1996 was an incredible year for hip hop. On July 2, 1996, NaS released his 2nd album, It Was Written. It was the follow up to his classic debut, Illmatic. This album would be his most commercially successful album spawned by the smash hit “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” with Lauryn Hill.

On The 12kyle Podcast, I will discuss the It Was Written and the significance of the album. I’ll also talk about the “beef” that NaS had with Tupac and Jay Z. Listen to the podcast and share your thoughts!

hip hop vs rap

This is HIP HOP week on the 12th Planet. All of the posts this week will be about hip hop. Make sure that you check out Wednesday night's 12 Radio show. I will break down the battle between Jay Z and NaS.

Somebody asked me what's the difference between rap and hip hop

Hip hop is something that you feel.
Rap is something that you do.

Hip hop is born within you...it's something that you live
Rap is a vehicle

Hip hoppers are authentic and genuine
Rappers are created and packaged to be marked to the masses

Hip hop has been around for 40 yrs
Rap...at times...can be a passing fad

Hip hop embraces a culture that expresses individualism and unity.
Rap tends to embrace everything, copy it, then try to be something different

Hip hop is a Mercedes Benz
Rap is a Toyota Camry

Most good hip hop won't make the radio in 2014
Most bad rap will make the radio in 2014

Hip hop artists will respectfully "battle" or "beef" for lyrical supremacy
Rappers will "battle" or "beef" just for entertainment

Somebody asked me what's the difference between rap and hip hop

That's like asking me the difference between loving someone and being in love with that person. It's not the same
