coming 2...

I'm not sure who came up with this idea.

Maybe they THOUGHT that it was a great idea.

I'm sure that's what they thought.

It's not a good idea...at all

Last month, it was announced that Eddie Murphy would be returning to the big screen as Prince Akeem for the sequel to Coming to America. The original smash movie made it's debut 30 years ago in 1988. In a released statement, Eddie Murphy said...

"After many years of anticipation, I'm thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward... We've assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I'm looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen."

It was also revealed that Kenya Barris, the creator of black-ish (one of my favorite shows), will be writing the screenplay.

When I heard this news, I immediately slumped in my seat. Anybody that knows me...knows that this is my favorite comedy of all time! I remember going to movie theaters back in '88 to see the movie. I also remember watching it a gazillion times on HBO. Like most fans of this movie, I know EVERY line from this movie. This movie was a cultural event. Even to this day, when this movie comes on tv, I will sit and watch it as if I've never seen it. To say that I love this movie, it's an understatement.

That said...

They don't need to make a sequel. This movie is perfect just the way that it is. I really don't know that you can "re-create" the magic from 1988. While Eddie Murphy is one of the greatest comedians we've ever seen, I don't know if he can pull this off. I mean...when is the last time we've seen Eddie Murphy be REALLY funny? It's been a minute. I'm all for nostalgia but I just don't know about this one. Sometimes things can be better the second time around when it comes to movies. I don't think that can/will happen here. If I think this movie was perfect, how do you duplicate perfection. You can't.

Who am I fooling? I'll probably go to see it. My expectations will be very low but I'll go. Can a movie that was dope 30 years ago be dope the 2nd time around????

We'll see...

school with NO BOOKS

I found this story on the NY Post. A sad story of how people are failing the children on a day to day basis...

This principal runs a school of “no.”

Students at PS 106 in Far Rockaway, Queens, have gotten no math or reading and writing books for the rigorous Common Core curriculum, whistleblowers say.

The 234 kids get no gym or art classes. Instead, they watch movies every day.

“The kids have seen more movies than Siskel and Ebert,” a source said.

The school nurse has no office equipped with a sink, refrigerator or cot.

The library is a mess: “Nothing’s in order,” said a source. “It’s a junk room.”

No substitutes are hired when a teacher is absent — students are divvied up among other classes.

A classroom that includes learning-disabled kids doesn’t have the required special-ed co-teacher.

About 40 kindergartners have no room in the three-story brick building. They sit all day in dilapidated trailers that reek of “animal urine,” a parent said; rats and squirrels noisily scamper in the walls and ceiling.

And the principal — Marcella Sills, who joined PS 106 nine years ago — is a frequent no-show, sources say.

Sills did not come to school last Monday. On Tuesday, she showed up at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, The Post found her at home in Westbury, LI, all day before emerging at 2:50 p.m. — school dismissal time. Wearing a fur coat, she took her BMW for a spin.

She showed up at school Thursday, but not Friday.

When Sills, 48, does go to work, it’s rarely before 11 a.m. — and often hours later, say sources familiar with her schedule.

“She strolls in whenever she wants,” one said.

The school hasn’t had a payroll secretary in years.

A Department of Education spokesman said Sills was required to report her absences and tardiness to District 27 Superintendent Michelle Lloyd-Bey but would not say whether Sills did so last week.

Lloyd-Bey did not return a call. Sills hung up on a reporter.

When she is out, an assistant principal is left in charge. Yet Sills, who gets a $128,207 salary, also pockets overtime pay — $2,900 for 83 hours in 2011, the latest available records show.

“This school is a complete s- -thole, but nobody in a position of power comes to investigate. No one cares,” a community member said.

PS 106 families hope their cries for attention bring newly installed Schools Chancellor Carmen FariƱa to the rescue, saying they can’t recall any prior DOE leader visiting the remote school.

She would find it sinking, they say.

The isolated building sits a block and a half from the beach, surrounded by vacant, weed-choked lots, the road behind it strewn with trash bags and broken TVs.

The floods of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 wrecked a hangar-like annex, called the Early Childhood Academy, which housed pre-K, kindergarten and first and second grades. It has not been repaired.

Two kindergarten classes moved into “temporary classroom units” in the yard. The other children moved into the main building, forcing some classes to squeeze into small offices and storage rooms. The pre-K class sits in the auditorium, but has to move to the cafeteria during the movies.

Kids in several grades said that last week they watched “Fat Albert,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “Monsters, Inc.,” but did not relish the downtime.

“I like gym. I like to draw,” said Charm Russell, 10, who added her peers are too restless and bored to watch the screen. “They’re always making noise, and there’s nothing entertaining going on. No art, no gym, no music class.”

More alarming, the teachers have gotten no curricula since Sandy. Last February, the DOE announced several new options, including “Go Math” for grades K-5, and “ReadyGen” or the state Education Department’s “Core Knowledge” for English language arts. The books cover the Common Core standards, skills that kids should master at each level.

But five months into the school year, PS 106 classes still don’t have the books or teacher’s guides.

“They have no reading program, no math program,” a source said, adding Sills blames outside administrators for not sending materials.

Teachers muddle through by printing out worksheets they find online, buying their own copy paper.

The DOE gave no explanation for the missing curricula but said it’s “working with the school to provide students with physical education.”

A spokesman denied the trailers are rat-infested.

Staffers won’t speak up or even file a grievance with their union because Sills will retaliate, a source said.

Parents wonder if higher-ups know what’s going on.

“Why don’t they get on them? I don’t understand that,” said Michael Moore, father of a second-grader.

Another father, Roland Legions, added. “They’re not doing right by the kids.”

One mom said she couldn’t get a meeting with Sills to discuss concerns. Another said Sills is “just not professional.”

“She should be here,” the mom said. How is she going to run the school if she’s not here?”

PS 106 is allocated $2.9 million to serve a low-income population with 98 percent of its students eligible for free lunches. As a Title 1 school, it gets extra federal funds, but community members say they’ve never seen a budget tracking the income and spending.

what's on the box?

I'm a big NBA fan.

And as many of you know, the NBA season is in jeopardy.

So...with no NBA to keep me occupied when there's no football on, I have to find other things on TV when there's no football on. I've realized that despite the fact that DirecTV provides me 800 channels, I only watch 10 channels. I have a few options with my TV programming...

I could...

1. Watch reality TV - I could catch up with those lovely "women" from the Atlanta Housewives. You know...see who NeNe is cussin' out or see who's sleeping with who. Maybe I could watch the Basketball Wives? If I did, maybe I'd figure out why Doug Christie married that psycho 17 times? Who gets married 17 times? Or maybe I could check out the hip hop wives show...where they are called wives but are really baby mommas. Seriously...I've never spent a minute watching any of this stuff. I only know of it through conversations at work and Twitter. I will...shamefully admit to watching Flavor of Love (season 1) & the Salt N Pepa Show (loved that joint)...but that's it

2. Watch movies I've never seen before - hmmm...where should I start...Casino, any of the Mission Impossible movies, Ironman, the Matrix Trilogy. Or maybe The Color Purple, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, (Soul Plane <---definitely won't be watching that). As you can see, there's quite a few that I haven't seen so I've got some catching up to do.

3. Break out the XBox 360 - Who wanna see me in Madden??? It's been a minute since I've played my 360. It's been about 3 yrs. But I know...I mean I think...I'm still nice on the sticks

4. Watch CSPAN - you can NEVER get enough of CSPN

5. Watch Animal Planet - it's always fun to see a tiger bring down a zebra in the jungle

Who am I kidding? Pass me the remote so that I can find Martin, Good Times, and Sanford & Son

I was never much of a movie guy.

The past few years I've gotten into movies.

I like going to the movies nowadays.

I love the popcorn and the whole aura of being at the movies. I've even expanded my DVD collection. It's nice but not as big as my boy, Dluvhall's. The other day I watched The Hangover for the 2nd time. It was hilarious...again. As I was watching it, I tried to even remember when it was out in theatres. I couldn't remember. Was I too busy to see it? Or did I just not care. I remember having a conversation with my boys, Moe and Clark, about the movie. When I told them that I hadn't seen it, they asked me about some other movie. I hadn't seen it. They asked me about 3 more movies. Nope...didn't see them either. Then, it dawned on me...there are a TON of movies that I HAVEN'T seen. I know if I told you some of the movies that I haven't seen...it'd piss you off. You'd say..."I can't believe you've never seen that!" Well...here ya go...

The Color Purple

The Matrix (the original and the rest of the series)

The Godfather

GoodFellas

Casino

Die Hard

The Shining

Soul Plane (LOL)

Any of the Madea movies

Braveheart

Gladiator

Pulp Fiction

Kill Bill (1 & 2)

Blade

Belly

Monster's Ball

Precious

The Pursuit of Happiness

I could go on...but I won't.

Love Jones

One of my favorite movies of all time.

I watched it the other day for the 2000th time (i guess)

One of the most important scenes in the movie was when Nina decided to take the advice of her best friend, Josie.

(for those who haven't seen the movie...I'll break it down for you).

Nina was beginning a synergetic relationship with Darius. She gets approached by her ex-fiancee who invites her to leave Chicago and move in with him in New York City. She is confused. Should she stay and build on what she has with Darius? Should she move to NYC to see what has left with her ex. While neither she nor Darius would classify their involvement as a relationship, they both knew that they had something special. However, they both described it as "just kickin' it."

Faced with a crucial decision...Nina seeks the advice of her best friend, Josie. Josie is single. Nina has a man. Therein lies the problem...

Why would you seek the advice of somebody who wasn't riding in the same boat that you were in? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Don't get me wrong. As a friend, they are there for you no matter what. But could she really speak to the situation with a clear understanding because she was not in a relationship?

For example, I'm married. I have friends who are both married and single. In fact, some of my boys are single. As a married man...could I ask JFresh or Clark a question about marriage when they've never been married? Both dudes are very cerebral and could give me a great deal of insight on how a female may think or act. But would I really seek their advice on marriage???

Which brings me back to Love Jones.

Don't you think you should seek advice about your relationship(s) with friends who aren't in a relationship?

Have you ever gotten bad advice from a friend?

lights...camera...akshun!!!!

I like going to the movies. I like watching a good movie that will hold my attention span. Because it costs an arm and a leg to go nowadays...i wanna get my monies worth. Sometimes i can imagine myself on the big screen.

That leads me to today's post. I'm jackin' this one from LRenee (c'mon back, gurl). She did this a few months ago.

1. If you wrote a movie about your current love story and had to use a song as a title. What song would you choose and why?

Gotta go with Sade as well...Kiss of Life. My ole lady (lol) is my best friend. We've been through thick and thin and we're still together

2. If you could reenact your favorite love scene from a movie, what movie would you choose and what scene?

Eddie Murphy and Robin Givens in Boommerang. He went from having is "toes curled up" to sucking his thumb. That's me. haaaaa

3. In your love story movie....what celebrity would you cast to play the role of your significant other? Why?

Sanaa Lathan. Why ask why? LOL

What about you???

Hollatchaboiiii!!!!
