a common bond

I watching the ring ceremony for the Boston Celtics the other night. The ring ceremony is when the Celtics, who won the NBA Championship last season, were given their championship rings. They were presented the rings before their fans before the start of their first game of the NBA season. The ring ceremony is also the last time that you are celebrated for the previous years success. This is a new season. Time to defend the title.

Watching the ceremony, I was able to reflect back to the day when I played football for South Carolina State University. During my junior year, we won our conference as well as the Black College National Championship. We were awarded the ring that you see above a few months after our magical season was over. I was blown away when i first saw it (yes..those diamonds are real. LOL.)

Much like the Celtics, through the experiences that we went through...it has created a bond between me and my teammates that will never be broken. We all have strong bonds. We have bonds with our family, crew, hood, frat/sorority, etc. There are only maybe a hundred people who have gone through some of the same experiences that I did to get that ring. I can't put into words how special that bond is. It's not like the bond that I have with my crew or my family. It's strong...but just different. And like the Celtics, when I see or talk to an old teammate...we can reminisce about what we accomplished and what we went through.

Like the Celtics, every teammate isn't gonna be your best friend. Shoot, you might not even like some of your teammates. Some dudes you wouldn't have a drink with. LOL. But at the end of the day, we share that common bond b/c of the experience that we shared together. When we see each other, it's all love...just like the Celtics. There are a select few of your teammates who become like brothers to you. Like I said before...it's a very unique bond.

So...in many ways...we're just like the the Celtics and the bond that we share with others can only be described in one word...CHAMPIONS!

I am a huge stickler for good customer service. Nothing frustrates me more than to try to conduct a business transaction and having to deal with bad customer service. For example, if I call for technical support help with my DSL...I would like to speak with somebody who speaks ENGLISH. I don't care about outsourcing...gimme a dude who understands what the hell I'm saying. Period! That's not asking a lot

I've learned that if you wanna get something accomplished while completing a business transaction, then you have to be courteous no matter how bad the service. Sometimes...it's not a good idea to cuss folks out when you're trying to handle business.

It started here.

I took me like 5 hours to write that 1st post. Just me and my computer. Not sure where I was gonna go or what I was gonna say. I had only been blogging since Nov '07. But I didn't have my own blog. I would comment on other blogs but the idea of having my own blog was downright scary to me. At the time, I didn't have a job. Downsized from the imploding mortgage industry, I needed an outlet.

Much like Reasonable Doubt...there was supposed to only be one post and then I was gonna quit. I just wanted to see if I could do it. It started out with one and today I celebrate my 200th post! Not bad for a dude who was gonna quit after one post b/c nobody commented on my first post. LOL

I am happy to have reached 200 posts. The 12th Planet has become something special for me. First and foremost, I've gotta thank my boy Weja and my girl LRenee. If you had never suggested that I create my own blog, then I probably never would have done it. Also gotta thank Don and Eb the Celeb. I don't know where Don is (i used to see him around but i don't know if he's still bloggin) but if he had never come to my blog then I would have never met the trillion people who read his blog. Thanks to Eb for the vodoo (lol) shout out back then on RBW. Despite the fact that you like the Cowboys and you went to A&T...you aiiight with me, sis. LOL

I could make an attempt right now to shout out to everybody who has been at the 12th Planet. But if I give a shout out and forget ONE person...I'll be getting an email saying "you didn't give me a shout out! I've been reading since '85." LOL. So, lemme just thank errrrrybody who reads and comments. From those of you in the blog crew...to those who read every day and comment...to those who read and NEVER comment. I really do appreciate you for vibing and hollerinatchaboi each day.

I appreciate the friendships that have been formed through the 12th Planet. I don't take that for granted. Most of you read this blog everyday and I have close friends who've NEVER read my blog. LOL. And I'm cool with that. Over a period of time, I've come to believe that you do one thing...blog for you. Period. It's your thoughts. If you blog for you, you'll be fine. It doesn't matter who reads it. One day I may wanna talk about Obama and the next day I may wanna talk about frogs. And that's cool. Blog for you...and people will read. Even if they don't read it...let it be your method of expression.

The other day I stumbled as I entered our walk in closet.

For me, there's 3 pair of shoes that I need.

1. Black Cole Haan dress shoes- sleek...can go with any suit

2. White Air Force Ones- it's hard to find a white pair of tennis shoes but these kicks can go with anything

3. Wheat Timberlands- I've always had a fresh pair of wheat Timbs. One of my favorite shoes of all time

The above quote was uttered by Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis. I was a bit surprised that he made the comment. Everybody knows that I'm for Obama. I don't begrudge those of you who want to vote for mcshame and pale-lynn. It's your choice. I just find it irresponsible for a black man who does NOT vote. I don't need to give you a history lesson on what voting means to our people. Well...maybe I should give a lesson to Clinton Portis.

He may have "Republican money" but he didn't come from wealth. This year, Portis will make more that 7 million dollars from playing football for the Washington Redskins. Obama's tax plans would hit him in his pockets harder than it would for us. However, Portis may have forgotten about how his decision NOT to vote may hurt his kids or his grandchildren. People fought and died for his right to vote. Maybe somebody should tell him that.

This election has brought out some heavy hitters. We've seen athletes and entertainers donate their money to their political candidate. Just a few weeks ago, NBA superstar LeBron James was seen at a rally for Obama in Ohio. Entertainers like Mary J Blige, Big Boi from Outkast, and Jay Z have publicly backed Obama as well. Recently, the Cleveland Browns head coach, Romeo Crennel (who is black), banned all political talk from the team's locker room because it had gotten intense between players.

Something tells me that Portis is not alone in his thoughts about not voting. His political affiliation...just like mine...is nobody's business. However, he opened his mouth and now I got something to say about it. I think you have to vote. I don't care who you vote for or how much money you make. I don't care if he wrote his OWN name in for president and made Flavor Flav his VP. Just vote. Jay Z has a whole lot more money than Portis but he's gonna vote. I think you'd be a fool NOT to vote.

First...I wanna thank errrybody for their comments, concerns, thoughts, prayers, and threats to do bodily harm (lol) from yesterday's post. I have to say that I was flattered at your concerns for ya boy and my family.

Yesterday's post was totally FICTION. Not true...at all. It was a scenario that I created. Now...before you get mad lemme explain my thought process.

I actually got the idea from a statement that was made by my girl Jaded NYer. A few days ago, she made mention of an ex that found her online. She mentioned that she might be "overexposed". That got me to thinking. Although I don't have a myspace page (too old for that...lol), I have a blog...I'm on twitter, facebook, AIM, BBerry Messenger, etc. Much like you, I have divulged a great deal of personal information to those of you who read what I write. Scary when you think about it. It'd be cool if it were only read by the 25-30 people who comment each day. But I dunno how many people actually read this blog. In these days of information technology, we are all overexposed to some degree.

That said...I don't live in fear of somebody stalking me. I just don't. I ain't that important. LOL. However, I am concerned when I think about some of my sisters who could run into an overzealous "STAN" or "CANDI". I did this post just to show that sometimes we have to be careful about the information that we put out there. I don't think anybody should sensor their blogs but you should be careful about how you "put stuff out there". Information may not always be received the way that you intend it to be received.

Once again, thanks for your concern. I hope that I didn't raise your blood pressure yesterday. LOL. I think even Keisha the Kitten was on the verge of cussin'. LOL. And I believe that all of you who stated that you would "get busy" to defend me!!! LOL. Y'all are ride or die for real!!! Good to know that y'all got my back. Trust me...i'd do the same for y'all.

Lastly, if "Candi" had rang the doorbell to my house...that would have been the last doorbell that she would have touched in her life. Mrs12 would have whupped her azz on the spot. LMAO!!!

It started with an email.

The email read... "Hello Kyle. I've been reading your blog for a few months now but I've never commented. Just wanted to let you know that I enjoy your work and the vibe on your blog. Candi "

I responded...just as a do to almost everybody..."Thanks for reading. Thanks for coming thru. It's ok to comment...we don't bite."

I was glad that she reached out to me. I didn't think much about it until she commented on my blog 3 days later. I greeted her as I do everybody when they first make a comment on my page. "Welcome to the 12th Planet. Make sure that you come back. We have a good time over here. We're here every day..." (you know the rest...LOL). Later that day, she sent me another email to thank me for responding to her comment. In the email, she also let me know that she also lived in Atlanta. I thought that was cool b/c I like to know where all the local bloggers are so that we can co-ordinate the upcoming ATL blogger event. Nevertheless, I would get emails from Candi for next month. I'd usually get a few a week. Nothing big. Just chit chat. I found her to be very cool. She was a hip hop head and a sports fan like me. That's mostly what we'd talk about. I made nothing of it. I viewed her as a friend.

One day I received a friend request on Facebook from Candi. I accepted without hesitation. The next day, I received an email letting me know that she was following me on twitter. No problem for me. It was innocent in my eyes. A few days later, I received an email from Candi that said..."Hey, I know that you're in marketing. I need some help with a business plan that I have developed for my company. Can we meet for lunch. My treat. And yes...I'll pay you for your services. Here's my number (404) xxx-xxxx. Send me yours and we can meet at Nan in midtown for lunch."

I accepted without hesitation. Who wouldn't want some additional cash? I'm all about that paper. LOL. Anyway, we agreed to meet at Nan on a Friday afternoon. As soon as I walked in the restaurant, she was there to greet me with a hug. Candi was cuter than her profile picture. As we waited for our table, she told me how nice my suit looked. After we grabbed a table, I reviewed her plan and made some suggestions. We talked about the Falcons and the Hawks. Then, she asked if we could hang out again. "Yeah. You bring a date and I'll bring Mrs12 and we can kick it." She laughed and said that she wanted to hang with just me. That was the sign to me that something might be wrong but I brushed it off. We left the restaurant and agreed that we'd keep in touch. I told my boy Clark about her b/c I had planned to introduce him to her since they are both single. Well, I got an email from her at 3:12 am that said that she enjoyed lunch and she wanted to see me again.

I read the email on my blackberry the next morning. I ignored it. Then later on that day, I got a phone call from her while I was at Kameron's football practice.

"Hey. Did you get my email?"

"Yeah. I did. Candi, you know that I am married. You've read my blog. I'm all about my wife and my sons. I think you're cool. I dunno what's going on in your head...but I don't get down like that. You feel me?

"Yeah. I understand." Click. She hung up.

Three days later, I get an email from Candi that caught my eye. Well...the subject line said it all...YOU AINT SHIT!!!!!! I read the email where she accused me of leading her on. She called me a dog. She said that I was a womanizer. She said that she was gonna get on my blog and tell the world what kinda person I was. I read it and laughed my head off!!!! Everybody who knows me know that I'm drama free. I deleted the email. The next day I see her BMW in the parking lot next to my office. How did she know where I worked? Then, she kept calling my cell phone and hanging up. I'm thinking..."what the hell is wrong with her?"

I called her the next day. She didn't answer so I left her a voicemail. "Candi, I dunno what kind of games you're playing but I don't play games. You need to fall back. Or else!"

No response from her. In fact, I didn't hear anything for a week. Then, I get an email from her at 8:30 pm. I was leaving practice with Kameron. The email read...

"How would you like it if I told your wife about us? BTW...you have nice house. I like the black shutters on the white house. Maybe I should go and ring the doorbell? I know that your wife is home b/c I saw her with your sons in the yard earlier today."

Some times hip hop takes you back. Listening to certain songs makes you wonder what happened or the vibe the day that a song was recorded.

One of my favorite songs off Jay Z's debut cd, Reasonable Doubt, was this duet with Biggie called Brooklyn's Finest. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall that day. I would have liked to have seen what the vibe was like in the studio the day that it was recorded.

VH-1 recently came up with a list for the top 100 songs in hip hop history. I'm nor really sure what the criteria was to be on this list. And I'm not sure who made VH-1 the authority on hip hop to even DO a list. I mean, BET should have done this. As much as I despise that network, they probably could have come up with a better list

Today, I'm gonna pay homage to a place. A place that I knew very well but never got a chance to REALLY experience it like my friends did.

It was a place that was etched in my memory beginning in 1991 (freshman year of college)

Unfortunately, the place no longer exists. It is gone... but not forgotten

The place that I want to pay homage to is...

Kick Booty Liquor Store

Yes. That was the name of the liquor store. Kick Booty. (i know that you're laughing but i'm telling the truth)

It was located in the town where I went to college...Orangeburg, SC

I never really got a chance to enjoy Kick Booty b/c when I was in college...I didn't drink. In fact, I didn't take my first drink until I was like 25. But I took many trips to Kick Booty b/c I was always the designated driver when I hung out with my teammates. We'd go to Kick Booty and they'd buy liquor. Keep in mind that Kick Booty had a policy...they DID NOT care how old you were. They never checked IDs or anything. If you had a mustache...you could purchase beer. LOL. And you could get liquor at 9 am!!!

A few years ago, Kick Booty burned down. Dunno what happened. There is a place called Kick Booty Motorsports located in the same town. I wonder if it's owned by the same dude that owned the liquor store? It amazes me that the store operated the way that it did and no one was ever busted for selling booze to underage college kids.

After taking my friends to Kick Booty, we'd ride around and they'd get drunk which was comical to me. They'd tell stories about great they were in high school and I'd laugh. Then, they'd tell me how they felt about me..."(slurring) Kyle, you mah nikka! Youz a good dude. I like you, man. You got a lottttta heart." I used to call it Drunken Confessions. Those were the days when I wish I had my camera. It'd be on reality tv or on youTube. LMAO!!!

So today...I pay homage to the one and only...Kick Booty Liquor Store.

Anybody else have a place like this where some shenanigans would go down???
