ReplyDeleteMan, growing up in the 5 boroughs when hip hop kicked off in the late 70's was amazing. We all thought it was a passing thing in the beginning. Then when Run DMC broke open the radio and video rotation it seemed like it was for real. For about 4 years from like 82 to 86....Run DMC OWNED hip hop. LL was hot but he didn't own it. MC Shan, T-la Rock, Spoony G was all there but Run DMC was the shyt.

Theres alot of history in all this music to me. Hip hop was coming of age and i was kid sopping it all up.
I had the privaledge of knowing Kurtis blow, and LL , and Run DMC, the likes of Mic Geronimo, Nas as a kid. All of them had ties to Hollis Queens where i was raised. I remember a free concernt in 84 i think every Queens act came out to IS 72 and ripped it down, back when ll and my uncle lifted weights- he used to drive the only red Def Jam Jeep Wrangler.. I think he lived on 192nd Street in. Mic Gernonimo "My shit is real" filmed on my block on 201 n Hollis. Right down the street on 111th ave, Nas dated a girl across the street from us forgot her name but one of Mr Rogers daughters. He used to Drive a Lex LS400- the lex bubble lol, ( the car I dreamed of and bought one of my own)..
That Erik B joint was filmed (in part) on my BF's (bestfreinds's) roof and building on the corner of 128th St n St Nick Terrace ( I was on 125 and St Nick - member puff wit dat), Eb know where thats at lol.. they filmed the whole movie Juice (-1- thats the queue.. oh and check out Do The Right Thing too) up in that whole are. I moved to harlem when i was 12.. You took me back wit theses.. You took me back fam, 'preciate that..
i wish i was alive back then so that i could have more of an appreciation for that music
