Last week, we took a look at some hot cds from the 80s. A few of the young inhabitants at the 12th Planet couldn't really comment b/c they were just lil babies in the 80s. They asked for a post about the 90s music. Well...here ya go!
I looked through the old cd collection and I picked out one of my favorite cds from the 90s. One of my favorites from the 90s...comes from one of my favorite MCs. It was the first cd from a Brooklynite named Shawn Corey Carter.
Reasonable Doubt is the debut album by East Coast rapper Jay-Z. It was released on June 25, 1996 by Roc-A-Fella Records in the United States and Northwestside Records in the United Kingdom. The album features production from DJ Premier, Ski and Clark Kent, and guest vocals by Memphis Bleek, Sauce Money and The Notorious B.I.G. It peaked at #23 on the Billboard 200, received platinum status in 2002, and sold 1.4 million copies as of 2006. Four singles were released, the most popular being "Ain't No Nigga" and "Can't Knock the Hustle". The first one was good, too, I mean it DID have November Rain on it.
But it was II that I played all the time; especially Estranged and You Could Be Mine (from the Terminator 2 movie soundtrack).
Ooh, and then I got to see them live on the Using Your Illusion tour, with opening act SOUNDGARDEN!!! It was a good time to be The Jaded NYer...

Great pick! I remember getting this cd for free b/c one of my teammates said that he didn't like it. I listened to it. I didn't like it either. But I listened again...and again...and again...and I was hooked. I became a Wu head!

Illmatic. One of the greatest cds in the history of hip hop. NaS was unbelivable. Just like Jay Z, all of his work is always measured against this cd. I remember playin it for my teammates and they couldn't understand it. NaS was ahead of the game. And he still is.

ReplyDeleteJay-Z Reasonable Doubt(6/96)- by far Jay's best work. In my opinion he hasn't had a cd to match. This cd can run with out skipping over any songs. One of the hottest cd's ever recorded!
Nas- Illimatic(4/94)-When East Coast hip hop was falling off. Nas came and dropped this gem then Big came in (9/94)and dropped Ready to Die. Nas was 19 when he recorded Illmatic he spoke about gangs,poverty,desolation and the struggles of being an inner city teen. To me it was pure genius!
Notorious BIG-Ready to Die(9/94)- One of my favorite albums of all time. This album made Big blow up. Especially "One More Chance" the cameos in that video were bananas! My all time favorite Big song is "Who shot ya" beat is straight bananas!
Tribe Called Quest-Low End Theory(9/91) Yet another fiyah cd in hip hop. This album brought an alternative twist to hip hop and the beats were hot!The lyrics were fun and light and sometimes political. This is cd is always in heavy rotation.

Wu-Tang-Enter the Wu-Tang(36 Chambers)(11/93)- My first "Thug Love" Method Man...lol! This cd was hot and I still bump it. C.R.E.A.M was such a hot ass song. They sampled from soul music and had clips from old maritial arts movies. The sound at the time was unique.
Snoop-Doggy Style(11/93)-I waited in line to get this cd!
Dr. Dre-The Chronic(12/92)-The beats and delivery were HOT!

I hope they come back together...at least Lauryn. I don't know if anyone said this one, but my second one is Mary J. Blige's What's The 411. Talk about a great R&B album...her voice was raw. I remember coming home everyday from school and dancing off of "Real Love" (while pretending I was a Fly Girl, my ultimate dream job...lol).
