back in MY day

I just dropped Deion and Kameron off at school. Today is the last day of school. Kameron has completed Kindergarten and Deion has completed 3rd grade. They are soooo lucky. They go to a great magnet school. And they love school. Watching them walk into the building took me back to MY day...

Do you remember...

...when you played at recess.

....when you thought boys/girls were yucky

....when you started liking boys/girls

...when you looked forward to taking a test

...when math was only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

...when you could read books for days

...when you were a hall monitor or a safety patrol

...when you made straight A's

....when the girls could jump rope for ever

...when you could feel a girl on the booty and it wasn't sexual harassment

...when you knew the first and last name of everybody in your class

...when you befriended the "dirty kid"

...when you made fun of the "dirty kid

...when you sang loud and off key

....when you asked her "to go with you"

...when your favorite times of the day were PE, lunch, and recess

...when somebody did the "Solar System" as a science project

...when you got stage fright

...when you performed in front of a crowd and you loved it

...when your parents reminded you how smart you were

...those were the days

  1. Awwwwwwww, I can't believe that I am actually sitting here smiling remembering back in the days. I most def remember jump roping for what seemed like HOURS at a time. Now I can barely jump 30 seconds. Boobs are A LOT bigger. LOL

I loved playing kick ball at recess and when a boy touched you on the bum it signified your status as a hot chick. Too funny now that I am an adult.

I cried whenever I got anything less than an A. Yes I was and still am an undercover nerd and damn proud of it. LOL

In our school the "dirty" kid was that White kid that ate the glue in art class.

I remember having mom fix our hair for picture day in our cute dresses and when it was time to take the pics our hair was a curly/wavy/frizzy mess.

OMG! I could soooo go on forever. This was a great post.

  3. Yes, I can remember all of that. It's such a shame that it's only a fading memory.

    Um, YEAAA - I'm second!

  4. My childhood was the bestest! I remember jumping rope in the middle of the street, double dutch, playing kick the can...y'all know we had those ghetto made up games, kickball, dodgeball...and i was good at it too but i hated playing with boys because they always threw the ball so hard. Softball in the summer, although i was never good at it...i was that girly-girl for the most part. Math was easy, heck school was easy. I loved school. Chocolate milk...couldn't get that at home. Being chased by boys...my first kiss. Sliding boards and swings, but my favorite, that wheel that we all pushed and jumped on and it would make you sick if you weren't careful, but if you were, you felt like you were flying. Great memories.

  5. Good post. I would also add:

    -When you had slumber parties.
-When you played four squares, kickball, and hand clapping games (Twee lee leee) during recess.
-When P.E. was your favorite period.

AND - When summer meant three months of vacation and not just three months of working in the heat.

  6. Is it sad that some of those things still apply?

    Boys are still yucky!! lol

  7. oh my gosh! you done brought back memories. how bout me and mp just left my 4th grader's school play. our kids started school later this year due to a florida mandated rule so they aren't released from the pen' til june 4th! or is it the other way round? i'll be imprisoned come june 4th? ain't right!

loved the old school references 12teach. i'm sure we would'a hung if we were in school together... and remember when girls wore pony tails and dresses with shorts underneath to protect them (from 'fresh' tail boys who felt on girls booty!) if they fell on the playground? and parachute pants? field day, school spelling bee, corporal punishment-- yeah, my ass got one paddling during 5th grade!

  9. Awwwww! And I'm looking forward to some kickball this weekend with my cousins! It's funny that we've become our "parents" = the grown folk vs. the kids! LOL!

  10. ....when you thought boys/girls were yucky

When did that happen? I've always liked girls and my son is the same way.

...when you were a hall monitor or a safety patrol

Never got the chance, they were hating on a brother at an early age cause they couldn't control me. I was smart, but alway got in trouble for talking to everybody while they were working. I was done. Couldn't figure out what was taking them so long.

...when you could feel a girl on the booty and it wasn't sexual harassment

Man, in middle school we used to go "swiping booty". Me, Edward Baldwin, and William Parker. Those were the days.

...when you knew the first and last name of everybody in your class (see previous comment)

...when you befriended the "dirty kid" -- couldn't get with the dude that ate boogers.

....when you asked her "to go with you"

check "yes" or "no" and let's get this popping.

...when your favorite times of the day were PE, lunch, and recess

kickball and dodgeball were the illest.

...when your parents reminded you how smart you were

    gotta love that.

  11. Love this post. I remember all of these good times, i was a lucky little girl. My mom was very into my life and made things better no matter the situation. For heavens sake she made us real ice cream. now that's what's up!

And guess what I can still jump rope forever (and swing a holla hoop) and read books for days.

  16. okay i used to get into so much trouble when i was younger. they didnt do paddling back then, they used to pull your ears of hit you with a ruler.

i remember one time my dad came to pick me up and he came to the classroom. My name was on the board because i had been misbehaving. all i kept praying was pleeese dont let him see my name cause he would light into when we got home. lucky for me he ended up not seeing my name on that board, lol

i was such a tomboy i remember i used to love to play kickball and baseball. i was such a little boy in elementary and middle school.

(i think i was a boy in my former life, lol)

  17. Oh, and congrats to the boys!!!! :)

  18. I was a good kid since my older siblings went to the same school. Teachers would pull that "you have big shoes to fill young lady" crap that meant I better behave.

Ooooh demerits! Those little pink slips that you had to have your parents sign. I got 1 when I was in the 4th or 5th grade and I cried all the way home because I was so scared of getting a whoopin. No whoopin, just punishment.

I remember faking a boyfriend in 6th grade because all of my friends had one and I didn't. My parents didn't play that bf/gf ish. Couldn't even date until I was 17. But it was all good.

I remember penny candy! 85 cents would get me:

    1 pack now & laters
    1 bag David's sunflower seeds
    2 chic-o sticks
1 blue pop (not pepsi blue!)
    1 bubblegum cigarette, and
    3 pieces of penny candy

Yep, those were the days. Wearing that orange belt with the badge...you thought you were the ish.

...when you could feel a girl on the booty and it wasn't sexual harassment

Rich, I seriously laughed at that one. That took me back, along with wearing really baggy shirts to cover your butt so the boys wouldn't stare it at. (lol)

  22. LOL @ feeling someone's booty without it being sexual harrassment!

i remember all of those...even the dirty kid...well, she picked and ate the friends that lived in her nose...but i never befriended her. then again, later on in life there was another dirty kid who MADE me befriend her because she was twice my size and i was terrified of her. glad that's over *whew*

    ReplyDelete
  23. yep @ when you asked her to go with you. that was the deal back in the days.

played @ recess. i miss those times. then coming back into the classroom and being unable to wait until that smell started coming from the lunchroom.

remember playing outside until the street lights came on? time to shut it down. lol.

Feelin booties was very popular at my school. I was the fastest kid in my class. I could cop a feel and take off before she could catch me.

That damn wheel made me sick! LOL

Ohhhh yeah. I remember the good ole days!
When all we had to worry about was what flavor of Now and Laters we were going to get for the next day...
I used to HATE class changes because this group of fresh boys would stand around in the hallway and feel our butts when we walked past...
I remember my first school crush on a boy and would look forward to afternoon dismissal just so I could watch him walk down the hall. Remember how your girlfriends would write your name and his last name with hearts all over the paper??...
I remember when the notes asking if we would go with somebody also included a "maybe" box!...
I remember being in the girls locker room in gym and we'd stand there doing our "We Must, we must, we must increase our bust" exercise! Wouldn't be caught dead doing that now!!...
I remember safety patrols and their yearly trip to Washington, D.C. but I was quite the nerd. I was a student tutor instead so I could only admire the orange reflective sash from afar...

Great post. Thanks for the memories!
