It's been a few years since i've been on the dating scene

But there's ONE thing I know about it...

It can be EXTREMELY frustrating for some.

I won't profess to all of the answers...just all of the questions! A few days ago, I posted comment, on my off tha dome post, about how women should be aggressive but not thirsty. A few of my readers asked me to give more clarification on that statement.

3 THINGS THAT MEN WON'T ADMIT

1. Men like women who are aggressive and self confident

2. Men like women who can express themselves well

3. Men are genuinely flattered when they are pursued.

Herein lies the problem...

Most women won't aggressively pursue a man for fear of looking "thirsty." No woman wants to appear to be too eager for a man. They don't wanna appear to be slutty. You have to keep it classy! The problem comes when you have some women who will go ALL out and "sweat" a man.

Generally speaking, this isn't good because some men will confuse this practice with ALL women. Some women feel like they are doing the right things on the dating scene but they are coming up short to those "loose" women.

Ladies, there has to be a balance. And you have to find that balance. You need to appear to be interested in a man but don't look thirsty. Let him know that if his feelings are mutual then it's a good start for the two of you. By all means, let him know that you aren't playing games. Quite frankly, at our age (25 and up) we're too old to be playing games. I've asked women "would you ask a man for his phone number?" And many of them said NO! Really? You must meet men halfway. Is dating easy? Nope! Can it be frustration? Yes!

I'm often asked by women about my single male friends. I have a few of them. And they are all good dudes. But I'm no matchmaker. I can put you in a room with them. The rest is up to you.

Someone sent this to me the other day and I found it to be fitting.

It also made me think about the word happy

Are you happy? Am I happy? Happiness should not only be the destination but your place of residence. I read a lot of stuff on the internet and I have to ask myself why some people are so bitter and mad. Are they not happy? Maybe it's just me...but if I was having the worst day in the world...you wouldn't see me spazzing out on Facebook/Twitter or this blog. Not my style. I try to bring a positive vibe. Always have.

Maybe it's deeper for some people. How can you expect people to be happy about their life...when they aren't happy with themselves. You can't make your mate,family, friends, etc. happy if YOU ain't happy. I know this much...happiness starts from within.

Happiness comes to those who embrace it. And you should. If happiness ain't enough, live to be ESTATIC!!!

Kool Moe Dee once wrote a song about it going to see the doctor.

I'm a firm believer in it.

I also believe that as men...we are the LAST ones to go to the doctor.

Last month, I had my annual physical check up. I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't looking forward to it. Not sure why. I guess it was the fear of the unknown. I knew I was in good health. I work out regularly (not as much as I should)...I eat good (still addicted to McDonalds fries)...and I don't drink much (I visit Margaritaville every now and then). Yet, I was still concerned. Nevertheless, the visit came out fine. I'm in good health. The doctor and I discussed among other things...testing for prostate cancer beginning next year, my desire to live to the age of 125 (no lie), and my successful vasectomy last May (4 kids is enough, yo)

One thing that I took from the conversation is that we don't go see the doctor enough. Most women go all the time. And while they may not jump for joy to get that pap smear, they have doctor visits. We have to go. And go often. We're getting older. I've always been serious about my health. But it hits home when you see people your age leave this earth. I lost a teammate (http://the12planet.blogspot.com/2011/09/gentle-giant.html) a few months ago and that really opened my eyes.

I'm committed to my health. That's not a New Years Resolution. That's a fact. You may not find me on the track like my homegirl Latrice (@Rungirl_) or my boy Tee Reese (http://offtrackthinking.blogspot.com/ )but I am committed. More importantly, I'm all for getting my checkups. I need more men to join me. Ladies, send your men to the doctor. He can't be in your life if he's no longer here on earth.

the broken bike

Somebody broke the bike.

Somebody broke the bike and things ain't right. I know it. And you know it.

For the past 13 yrs of my life, I've worked on the bike (the mortgage industry). The bike once rode smoothly. And when it rode well...things were fine. During my years of working on the bike, I saw a lot. While I can honestly say that I never did anything illegal or unethical (nor was I asked to), I've seen some things. Actually, I saw quite a few things. More importantly, I saw an industry crumble. In the process of the bike being broken, I also watched the hood (the nation/economy) change. Things used to be good in the hood. Not anymore. In 2011, the hood is in shambles. The bike was broken...then fixed. But in the process of fixing the bike, the hood went down.

Could it be that that the process of the bike being broken that it single handily destroyed the hood? The lies. The greed. Could it be? Probably! I remember the words of one of my financial management professor when I was in college. Dr Cole said..."Even in a recession, somebody makes money." He never lied. No matter how bad things are in the hood, people are making money. Companies are getting rich. As I go to work each day, I wonder if some of these "new programs" are gonna help people in the long term. As an sr underwriter, I have to make the best financial decision for the company when it comes to approving or denying mortgage loans. But are we assisting people or are we putting a Band Aid on open heart surgery wound? For example, if you're able to lower your mortgage payment from $2200 to $800...would you do it knowing that the value of your home has decreased to the point where you owe more than what it's worth. In a nutshell...you're basically stuck there because you can't sell it and profit from it. These are the kinds of decisions that people have to face. Some face the reality of foreclosure. The hood is messed up. When the bike was broken, it made the hood so bad that the job market ain't what it used to be. If you're not working, you can't pay for your home. It's that simple.

So now that the bike is fixed, running, and back to profitability...how do we fix the hood? We could blame the Bush for creating this mess. We could blame Obama for not having the right people in place to fix it. We could point fingers.

Or we could start giving a damn about EVERYBODY in the hood, mobilize an effort, and try to fix the problems.

And almost everybody that I know...old and young...rich and poor...has a Facebook page. So do my parents.

Everybody isn't into Twitter. I've been on it since 2008. Long before most had even HEARD of Twitter. I used it to communicate with my fellow blogger friends. This was before twitter BLEW UP. Facebook - place where people "don't understand Twitter"

Twitter - place where people "retweet" every word of their favorite celebrity

Facebook - place where people will allow co-workers to become their friends

I heard Phonte utter those words last month when I attended the Foreign Exchange concert last month. I thought about it for a second and it made a lot of sense to me.

If you know me personally...if you've read this blog before...if you follow me on twitter...if you're a friend of mine on Facebook...you know about my love for music. In particular...hip hop. It's not just a love for old school hip hop and the culture. I am hip hop. I can tell you WHEN I fell in love with hip hop! It's a part of my life and it'll always be. Nothing will ever change that. For me it's more than just beats and rhymes. It's that feeling that you get inside. You know...that feeling. The feeling of a connection with you and the music. That's why hip hop will never die. It'll always be here for me.

Some may say that you will "outgrow" the music. How do you outgrow something that is a part of you? It doesn't happen. I'll be 80 yrs old and always feel this way about the music. You never get too old for it. Watch me. Listen to me. Vibe with me. And you'll learn more about my world and how I see myself when you hear me talk about hip hop.

So yeah...you may not understand.

I'm a big NBA fan.

And as many of you know, the NBA season is in jeopardy.

So...with no NBA to keep me occupied when there's no football on, I have to find other things on TV when there's no football on. I've realized that despite the fact that DirecTV provides me 800 channels, I only watch 10 channels. I have a few options with my TV programming...

I could...

1. Watch reality TV - I could catch up with those lovely "women" from the Atlanta Housewives. You know...see who NeNe is cussin' out or see who's sleeping with who. Maybe I could watch the Basketball Wives? If I did, maybe I'd figure out why Doug Christie married that psycho 17 times? Who gets married 17 times? Or maybe I could check out the hip hop wives show...where they are called wives but are really baby mommas. Seriously...I've never spent a minute watching any of this stuff. I only know of it through conversations at work and Twitter. I will...shamefully admit to watching Flavor of Love (season 1) & the Salt N Pepa Show (loved that joint)...but that's it

2. Watch movies I've never seen before - hmmm...where should I start...Casino, any of the Mission Impossible movies, Ironman, the Matrix Trilogy. Or maybe The Color Purple, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, (Soul Plane <---definitely won't be watching that). As you can see, there's quite a few that I haven't seen so I've got some catching up to do.

3. Break out the XBox 360 - Who wanna see me in Madden??? It's been a minute since I've played my 360. It's been about 3 yrs. But I know...I mean I think...I'm still nice on the sticks

4. Watch CSPAN - you can NEVER get enough of CSPN

5. Watch Animal Planet - it's always fun to see a tiger bring down a zebra in the jungle

It came and went.

*snaps fingers* Just like that.

The football season for my team came and went just like that.

As many of you know, I coach my son, Kameron's 8 and under youth football team. I've coached them for the past 4 yrs. We finished this season with a 7-3 record. We lost in the semi-final round of the playoffs. As I reflect on the season that we had, I can only smile. We've been working with the kids since mid MAY. I am extremely proud of the kids. They worked hard and did EVERYTHING that we asked them to do.

Coaching these kids have been very rewarding to me on a personal level. As I told the parents after the last game, it's all about watching the kids get better and developing as young men ON and OFF the field. I've watched the kids get better each week. I've watched their personalities come to life. While it's not always easy to keep the attention of 7 & 8 yr old, I coached a great bunch of kids. Our season started in the sweltering heat of May as we did conditioning and agility drills. Then our practices started in July. Unfortunately, the season ended on a brisk November afternoon. Nevertheless, I enjoyed every minute of it. Not only do I get a chance to coach the game that I love, but I also get a chance to help mold young men. I also enjoyed watching Kameron develop as a player. He started on offense at tight end and on defense at cornerback. It's been interesting to see him develop his confidence on the field.

As a coaching staff, we made sure that the kids perform well at school as well. If a kid gets out of line at school or at home, they were disciplined at practice. They hated it but they know that we don't play. Each kid had to regularly bring their report cards to practice. We wanted to monitor their progress in school. Sometimes we would randomly show up at their schools just to make sure they were "in line". We were hard on them...but they all delivered. Now we are faced with an off season. It feels strange not to go to practice after work. It feels even stranger to wake up on a Saturday and not have a game or practice. We've been doing this since July so I'm definitely missing the game and the kids.

There's always next year

To say that that the solo debut album, Charity Starts at Home, was high anticipated...would be an understatement. One reason is because everyone wanted to see what Phonte Coleman would bring to the table. Many people knew Phonte from his rhyme spitting days as a member of the North Carolina bred hip hop trio, Little Brother. Others knew Phonte as a soulful singer from his musical wizardry as a member of The Foreign Exchange. Most people weren't really sure exactly what to expect from Phonte. But for those who are familiar with Phonte they knew one thing...expect the unexpected

1. Dance In The Reign (featuring Sy Smith) - produced by Swift D

Phonte begins the song by proclaiming sarcastically saying "Thank y'all so much, thank y'all for listening. It's Phontigga, and I do this all for HIP-HOP!" Then comically admits..."I'm lyin like shit, I do this shit for my goddamn mortgage, n*gga. My bills, fuck am I foolin?" Phonte proceeds to ride the Swift D produced track like the true rap veteran that he is. 'Tay then reminds us of who he is with...

This rap shit is not the life I live. It's a tool that I use, that's it

2. The Good Fight - produced by 9th Wonder

Hip hop fans get a treat because this is one of four tracks that were produced by Phonte's former Little Brother group member, 9th Wonder. Not only can Phonte sing...but he SINGS. I don't think people truly understand how much effort it takes to rap on tracks and then to sing on others. Phonte has no problems balancing the two. He sings about the trials and tribulations of relationships...

Brillant track. Very refreshing to hear songs that speak about love that show how people can communicate their true feelings.

On this one, rappin 'Tay reappears. The first thing that jumps out is the beat. The pulsating beat had me thinking that it was done by 9th Wonder but it was done by Fatin. Great beat. Phonte and Pharoah Monch trade some hot verses on this track...

For 43 minutes, this album captures you and takes you on a journey. Phonte shows that he could rap and sing...or sing and rap...for as long as he wants. He has created some great music. Charity Starts At Home is a album that doesn't give you stories of mafia drug tales, shootouts, nor shoutouts to every clothing and liquor companies. It gives you a man...and emcee...who bears his soul. He offers words, thoughts, and opinions that most can relate to. I heard Phonte say in an interview that this album "wasn't for everybody". His words really didn't make sense until I heard this album. It's not for the average rap listeners who are watching thrones and are consumed with who is dissing who. Instead of telling you this is "grown folks rap", I'll tell you that this IS hip hop. This album won't sell a million records. And it probably won't win any "pseudo awards". This album reminds us all that every has a place at hip hop's table. Fortunately, Phonte is one of the few emcees who have a solidified spot at the table

Never underestimate a strong bond.

I am fully aware of the strong bond between parents and their children.

More specifically, the bond between a mother and her son. I don't have to look far to take note of it because I can see it in the bond that I have with my mother. The bond between a man and his mother is a special one. I've seen it develop in my own house as my wife has a strong bond with each of our 3 sons.

Now there is a new bond in my life. Three weeks ago today, my daughter was born. I had been told by my friends about how I should prepare myself to have my world turned upside down. And it has. As I look at her, I daydream. I understand that this bond must grow and our relationship must be cultivated. I am the first man that will ever love her. I am the man who has to show her what a REAL MAN is. I will always be Superman in Skyler's eyes. I am the measuring stick by which ALL men will be measured. If she saw me sloppy drunk, high, or smacking around her mother...what kind of impact would that have on her life? I have to give her...LOVE, DISCIPLINE, & an EXAMPLE to follow.

I can't help but look at her little face and wonder about what she'll be talking about 5 yrs from now. I wonder about how she'll handle her first day of kindergarten. I think about her painting a picture of me as a "stick figure". I can also see her becoming a young woman. I envision that moment when she has her first menstrual cycle. I see the awkward moment when she'd rather hang out at the mall with her friends instead of watching the football game with her dad. Then, there will be the moment when some lil snot nosed punk calls my house and wants to talk to her. I see it all. Clothing trends. Hairdos. Nails getting done. I see the day that I drop her off at college. Then I see day that I walk her down the aisle.I have envisioned it all

It's a new journey for me. The girls who I dated and the ones with whom I was friends with didn't really have fathers around. I mean, there was a few...but not many. I never remember going to a girl's house and being grilled by her father. Growing up, I remember having a female friend who has the perfect daughter/father relationship. Her father would take her on dates! In a sense, he laid the blueprint for her as to how she's supposed to be treated by a man. I had another friend who worshipped the ground that her DADDY walked on. She told me that she would often say to herself "I can't do that...my DADDY would kill me". I used to tease her about her DADDY but deep down I loved their relationship. I want Skyler to feel the same way about me one day. I want her to grow to be self sufficient and independent. She will not want for anything...me and her brothers will see to that. I want her to be a strong black woman. I call her the princess because one day she will be a queen...not a baby momma.

Children are a gift from God that are loaned to us. I pray that I have Skyler for 100 yrs. She hasn't been here long and I've already been planning her life! LOL.

More importantly, I can never lose sight of how strong our bond is and I must do whatever I can to keep it that way.

Religion

It's something that I've RARELY mention in the 4 yrs that I've had this blog. I don't talk about religion for my own personal reasons. I am a spiritual person and I see no need to impose my beliefs on you. These are mine. And you have yours.

Today will be different. Kinda...

I want to share with you some exerpts from a FUNNY sermon that I heard this past Sunday at my church. The title of the sermon was...HOW SWEET IT IS TO BE SINGLE

One thing that the pastor made clear that is universal...everybody has been or is single. Some have been single...married...then single. Others have been single...married...single...then married again. He tied the sermon to the bible verses, I Corinthians 7:27,28 ,32-35. One thing that I learned from the sermon is that it's ok to be single. Enjoy being single and you'll have no regrets.

HOW SWEET IT IS TO BE SINGLE

1. The ability to serve the Lord without marital FRUSTRATION makes being single sweet. (verses 27 & 28)

"Art thou bound unto a wide? Seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? Seek not a wife. But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin (meaning someone who has not been married) marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you."

TRANSLATION

Are you married? Stay married. Are you unmarried? Don't get married. But there's certainly no sin in getting married, whether you're a virgin or not. All I am saying is that when you marry, you take on additional stress in an already stressful time, and I want to spare you if possible

2. The ablilty to serve the Lord without marital OBLIGATIONS makes being single sweet (verses 32-24)

"But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how many he please the Lord. But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy in both body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband"

TRANSLATION

I want you to live as free of complications as possible. When you're unmarried, you're free to concentrate on simply pleasing the Master. Marriage involves you in all of the nuts and bolts of domestic life and wanting to please your spouse, leading to so many more demands of your attention. The time and energy that married people spend on caring for and nurturing each other, the unmarried can spend in becoming whole and holy instruments of God.

3. The ability to serve the Lord without marital DISTRACTIONS makes being single sweet (verse 35)

"And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction."

TRANSLATION

I'm trying to be helpful and make it as easy as possible for you, not make things harder. All I want is for you to be able to develop a way of life in which you can spend plenty of time together with the Master without a lot of distractions.

So you could avoid FRUSTRATION, OBLIGATION, and DISTRACTIONS by staying single?!!?

Hmm...

Now who wants to get married????

I met this 29 year old chick. Smart. Average looks. We chat on and off...but more off.

I hit her up to come over and watch a movie with me and some neighbors.

And she tripped!

She said "a real gentleman takes a woman out when he is courting her!"

WTF????

We text off and on!! Court what??? When was it against the rules to watch a movie among friends? Did I miss something?

I don't even know her last name!!! And she is actually mad about it. Whutchu think man?

Gentle Giant

To say that Orlando "Zeus" Brown was a giant is an understatement. The man stood tall at 6 foot and 8 inches. He weighed about 325 pounds when I met him in the fall of 1991. We were on the campus of South Carolina State University. He was my teammate. He was the biggest human being that I had ever seen. My first thoughts when I saw him..."Damn, I hope this guy plays offense like me." Fortunately, he did.

His mother nicknamed him Zeus because of her love for Greek Mythology.

On September 23, 2011...Zeus left this earth. He was only 40 years young. The news of his death shocked me. I'm still in shock. And while the cause of his death has not been determined, we mourn. Many of you reading this know what the media has reported about him...he played 11 seasons in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns & the Baltimore Ravens...he was once hit in the eye by an errant flag thrown by a referee that left his eye swollen, bloody and it caused him to push the referee and be suspended by the NFL...he sued the NFL for 200 million dollars (settled for 25 million)...he was one of the best to play his position when he played in the NFL...

I won't bore you with stuff that the media will tell you about the man. I'll tell you what I KNOW about the man.

Zeus was a GREAT player...but an even greater teammate. Zeus was one of the guys. He was a star but he always wanted to be one of the guys and not be treated like a star. One of my first memories of Zeus was during my freshman year. I had only been at school for a few weeks. I was getting homesick and I was down about not playing. Zeus stopped me in the dorm. He said "Aye young'n...where are you from? I saw you at practice today. Keep workin hard man. You're gonna play here." Those words stuck with me. I was surprised that an upperclassman would take the time to even speak to a lonely freshman! Two days later, he stopped by my room and said..."I'm going to get something to eat. Roll with me." I did. During that ride, I learned alot about my mammoth teammate. He was from DC (HD Woodson High School)...loved go-go music (which he blasted all the way to Burger King but I wasn't gonna tell him to turn it down)...how he earned his nickname, etc. I remember when we walked in...his 6 foot 8 inch frame dwarfed me at 5 foot 7 (150 pounds with rocks in pocket). I remember the looks and stares that we got when we walked in. Even though he weighed more than 300 pounds, Zeus wasn't fat. He was mostly muscle. Unlike most big people, he seemed very comfortable in his skin. He stood tall. Zeus was always smiling, laughing, and joking.

One of the other things that I remember about Zeus is that he was extremely competitive! He hated to lose! I remember being in the dorm one night and beating Zeus 3 consecutive times in Madden on Sega Genesis. I was talking trash. He said "Let's play again." I said "Man, I'm not playing you any more tonight, Zeus. It's almost 2am and I have a class at 8am." But he insisted...and I wasn't gonna tell the Big Fella 'no'. So we played and I won. The next day after we had both finished our classes...can you guess who was waiting for me in my dorm room to play again??? Big Zeus! He was determined to beat me! The ultimate competitor.

It came as no surprise to me that Zeus would be a success in the NFL. When you have the talent and the competitive nature that he had, he was destined for it. It wasn't a surprise that Zeus would go on to open a successful Fatburger restaurant in the DC area. I wasn't surprised to hear about his charitable donations to HD Woodson, SC State, and to the DC community. Zeus had it in him.

The last time that I spoke with him was a few years ago. Same ole Zeus. Crackin jokes and being who he was. You could hear the excitement in his voice when he spoke of his 3 sons. He was a proud father. I could only laugh because I remember him from school and I could see the growth in him. He was the SAME dude that he was the day that he stopped me in the dorm. No matter how much money he had. He was still one of the guys. He never changed. I never got a chance to hear him tell this STORY ABOUT HIS SCARY 9/11 EXPERIENCE in NYC (please click link and read). But I can only imagine hearing him tell it.

Zeus was a giant. A gentle giant off the field. He was almost like a big bear but you always wanted to be around a dude like that. I remember when he was in the NFL and he'd be on tv, I'd tell people..."That's my dude right there!" Since his death, I've gotten a few phone calls from former teammates who I hadn't heard from in years. I've been able to re-connect with some people on Facebook as well. Everybody had a story or a great memory of Zeus.

Guess you could say that this is mine.

Were we meant to be in one relationship?

Were we meant to date EVERYBODY and never commit?

Funny how these things come to my head. I heard this being discussed on talk radio the other day. I caught the end of it but what I heard made me think. I remember discussions that I've had with male and female friends. The perspectives from the males were vastly different from the females. Personally, I think there is SOMEBODY out there for everybody. Actually, there is more than one person for everybody. But does everybody want a girlfriend/wife or boyfriend/husband? I don't think so. As a man, we experience the ultimate journey. We go from being pimple faced teens who try to get as many girls as we can. Then, there's the girl that comes along who wants you all to herself. That transformation is a funny thing to see from a distance. The dude who used to run with the crew all the time gets transformed to a dude who is under his girlfriend all the time. And things change even more once we go from teens to men. Women have the same journey but I think they are more inclined to be in relationships and committed to one dude before men do.

I reached out to my partner in crime, JFresh, to get his perspective on it. J's a single dude with no kids and no serious relationship (*wink, wink). LOL. He offered this perspective...

Separate from all of our social conditioning is the base of our nature, desire. Desire doesn't necessarily have to refer to sexual desire, but the most primary desire to survive and satisfy cravings. Babies do this so effortlessly and we think it's cute. Babies eat, shit, sleep and cry when they don't any of those things exactly when they want it. Babies also masturbate when they want. These desires don't mature into social rules, rather we tend to curb these desires based on our training, upbringing. There is a never ending conflict between nature and nurture.

Being with ONE person is something existing between both nature and nurture. If you meet a person that makes you feel good, whether sexually or psychology caters to you, you want those feelings to continue, and logically so, you want to harness that source, own it. In my opinion, derived from studies, this is the birth of 'marriage', man's desire to own that which he likes. Still, this does not mean there is only one fruit that pleases our taste buds. It's not just man, but women have the same desires, hence, women are susceptible to the same weaknesses as a man. However, our societal construct has placed women in a position where they are the ones who have to behave in such manners as a "princess".

Now, as we know, no opinion or research findings are complete, but it would very difficult to argue that our true nature isn't to be free and satisfy our desires at will. Being with ONE person isn't being free, it's restricting and would imply that humans do not change. Heck, we barely want to eat the same foods everyday, but there is no turmoil concerning food because we can go to the grocery store and get what we want when we want it. A mate on the other hand can roam and hence becomes scarce, creating a demand which we then tend to pursue ownership of.

I could go on and on, and maybe I will expand on this further a little later. I came to this conclusion, or rather, understanding after reading several ideas from philosophy and psychology. I use to have similar discussions with my Human Sexuality professor in college and he agreed with my deductions, rather, he probably already had the same understanding.

The following post was written by my lil sis...Ms.Minnie. Like me, she has a love for hip hop...

My Dearest Hip Hop,

I met you june 1996, I was eight years old and I never knew that I would know what love was at such a young age. You taught me valuable lessons, and sent vibrations through my soul with bass, treble, and scratches from a turntable. Our relationship spans years, and I just wanted to let you know how I feel.

Our first liaison began when you introduced me to one of your sons, his name was Nasir Jones or Nas for short. He was soo fine, caesar haircut, gold chains, timbaland boots, and a chipped toothed smile. one day sitting on a bench infront of my project building, he whispered so softly in my ear “the world is yours”. That relationship is still going strong, but I feel that you two may have had alittle spat since he once claimed “hip hip is dead”.

After meeting Nas, I became intrigued with your ancestors and fore fathers. So I dug in my uncle’s dusty crates and that’s when I met some of my closest friends and teachers of life’s lessons. I thank you for introducing me to Public Enemy, De La Soul, Rakim, EPMD, Slick Rick (who always kept my attention with his amazing stories), Big Daddy Kane, The Pharcyde, Queen Latifah, MC LYTE, and the list goes on. Those were the people who you bought to the world, and to me that taught me how to be proud of who I am, or that I should conduct myself as queen, bring “U.N.I.T.Y.” to my community and family.

Our relationship began to change though. I lost all hope in us until you introduced me to your niece and nephews Lauryn, Pras, and Wyclef. I think they were called the fugees at the time. They had me singing melodies like “fu-gee-la” in my bedroom whether I was “ready or not”. Until this day they’re still “killing me softly”. I got closer to Lauryn though. She claimed to be mis-educated, but she was the smartest, deepest woman I could have ever met. She once told me “nothing even matters” and you know what IT DOESN’T.

Hip Hop that was our love story, My love was deep and strong. But now things have changed. You’re not the same. People always told me change is good, but that’s not the case with us. I thought I knew you. Never could Imagine you making it ok for women to be seen as objects “barbies” instead of queens. Never would I thought i’d see the day when you used auto tune. You broke my heart when you let beef into our relationship.

What happened to the days of ciphers, and emcee battles? What happened to the days where your music uplifted people? What happened to the days of originality?

Hip Hop I know times are changing, and I guess you have to go with what sells, but I know you’re not satisfied, i’m not satisfied.

I love you still and I just want you to go back….

I won’t give up on you

As long as there’s A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Jean Grae, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Common, and even your great, great, great nephews like J Cole and Jay Electronica give me hope that our love will survive this little fight.

Hip Hop I will always love you. You’ve been in my life for 15 years and I want this to last for as long as it can.

12 Things I LEARNED on vacay

I'm back!

Back from last week's vacation in Jamaica (Ocho Rios).

During that week, I learned a FEW things. Wanna hear em?

Things I LEARNED...

1. FIRST is better - thanks to my rewards points as an elite member with AirTran, my wife and I were able to fly first class to and from Jamaica. I always like first class. Not braggin or nuffin...but I like it. Comfortable seats. And I can get started drinking early. LOL

2. SOMETIMES you gotta DISCONNECT - for a whole week I was disconnected from my "social media empire". No twitter, 12RADIO, facebook, NBC Nightly News, ESPN, etc. Well, I did have access to ESPN and I briefly followed the NFL updates with the lockout. But for the most part, I had no phone access. And it was ok. Sometimes when you disconnect, you realize you give that stuff more time than you think.

3. WARM like BATH WATER - this blue/green ocean felt like I was in the tub at my house. Most people love to take a bath. I felt right at home in this water. And the pool!

4. ALL IN - you can't beat the all inclusive resorts. I took FULL advantage of the unlimited food and booze. I'll be back in the gym this week trying to work off the damage I did last week. I don't normally eat 3 meals a day and drink like a fish but I did. I mean...champagne at breakfast...I was outta control...but I was on vacay! LOL

5. YOU A JERK - If you are what you eat, then I'm a jerk...jerk chicken. I couldn't stop eating it. I've had jerk chicken before I went on vacay. But it didn't taste like this! LOL. I even asked the chef what he put in it because the meat was falling off the bone.

6. THREE ain't a CROWD - You have more fun when you have friends with you. We went to Jamaica with 2 other couples...my boy Russell & his wife Lisa...and their friends Lionel & Angela. We all had a ball together. We hung out the whole week. We dined together at every meal. We spent time talking about ourselves, our marriages, and the world. We were also there to celebrate Lisa & Russell's 10 yr wedding anniversary on July 27. There was a ceremony and they renewed their vows. The weather was beautiful that day and every day that week. We were truly in paradise. One night, we shut it DOWN at the piano bar with Lisa and I singing (yes...ole 12kyle can sing..lol) every song that the piano man could play. We might need to go on tour! LOL. In the end, we made some new friends and we're already planning NEXT year's trip!

7. JAMAICA mon - Jamaicans are some pushy people. Mad aggresive. They don't take 'no' for an answer. Maybe I shouldn't say all of them. Maybe it's just the ones who "work" at Dunn River Falls in Ocho Rios. They stand around and badger you to come and buy their products from them. When you don't, they get mad. One dude asked me if I wanted to buy some Jamaican woodcraft. I told him no. He said "You supposed to be a brother but you won't support another brother. That's a shame!" Huh? I chuckled. Maybe he should send ME some money when I gotta pay my mortgage company? LOL. I didn't take it personal. I know it's an extremely poor country and they make their money off tourism. Nevertheless, a silly guilt trip won't make me buy no woodcraft.

8. GET NEKKID - this is the "nude" island. To get there, you'd have to catch a boat from our resort because it is located about 400 yards away. Apparently, only elderly, white people like to get nekkid because they were mainly the ones who I saw going over there. I'm a progressive dude. But I dunno about laying around nude for a bunch of meat peepers to look at me. LOL

9. LEFT & RIGHT - The steering wheels on cars over there are on the RIGHT side of the car. And they drive on the LEFT side of the road. This was my 2nd trip to Jamaica and I've seen it before but it STILL freaks me out

10. TANNED - Contrary to popular belief, black people DO tan. Sherice was tanned. I think I was a lil tanned too! So now you can call me...the DARK CHOCOLATE BOY WUNDER

11. SUNRISE SUPRISE - One of my favorite moments was to watch the sunrise from my balcony. Looking out and seeing nothing but the ocean while listening to the waves crash was a great feeling. I used to the time to reflect on where I am...and where I'm going. Self relfection is good. Try it at sunrise whenever you can

Things aren't what they should be. Yet, she doesn't know why

People told her she'd never do anything good in life. It was truly sad

She didn't let it stop her from doing what she wanted to do

She had goals, ideas, and visions that she was determined to see through

Then, things changed.

Got strange

Was it the day when she was 17 and she went out with Roy on a date?

That was the night she told him 'NO' but he didn't stop and proceeded for the rape

Was it the day that her momma caught her in a lie?

She was supposed to go to school but instead she stayed at home and got high

Weed in the air and beer by the kegs

She woke up with her panties around her legs

What happened in that room? She didn't have a clue

All she remembers was it was her and 3 dudes.

Ten years have passed and she's just happy to be alive

She's 27. Never had a man. And she can't tell you why.

There have been men in her life who have came and went

In her mind, she's still waiting on the dude that is heaven sent

She knows how to use her body to get sex

But that's all she's ever gotten and she knows what's next

Unanswered text messages and phone calls

They made her feel like a used rag doll.

She's now at a critical point in her life

Hoping that a man will make her his wife

She knows nothing about commitment and it shows

The people on the street say "you can't marry a hoe"

Is that what she is? Just because she can't keep a man?

Does it matter if she's had several one night stands?

Sex on the first date? No problem for this woman

She can "do it" like nobody else can.

The problem with her is that she uses sex like a gun

She no longer even considers it to be real fun

It's just something to do while she's passing the time

Actually, both statements are true.

From reading this blog, you can assume certain things...my level of education, social economic status, level of intelligence, and some general personality traits. Even though we've never met, you feel like you know me. I'm a cool dude. The kinda dude you'd wanna hang out with. Well, that is true! I am THAT guy!

In being everything that you think I might be, I'm also a very private person. I am extremely careful about what say on this blog and in my tweets. While I would never make up lies or be someone who I'm not, I do believe that everything that happens in my life isn't for public consumption. SOME things need to be kept for yourself. We live in a era of reality tv and overexposure. I'm a firm believer that everybody doesn't need to know everything. So, the woman who tweets/blogs about all of her sexual conquests may think she's "keepin it real" but she'll be perceived as a ho. The dude who tweets/blogs about all the time about BS is perceived as a jerk with no life/social skills.

Some may say you can't control one's perception of you but if you VOLUNTEER information about yourself...you can control the info that you give out. Is it being paranoid? I don't think so. I just think we should all have a filter. We have to understand that once you press SEND or ENTER, it's for the world to see. That may not mean as much to others as it does to me.

Just be careful about what you say because you don't know who's reading it. And once you say it, you can't control how it's received or disseminated.

It's safe to say that my clubbin' days are long gone. It's rare that you'll find me in a club

This past Friday I made a rare appearance in the club. My boy, Travis, came to town and he wanted to hit a club. No problem. This is my dude. We've been tight since we were kids. I had a good time at the club. It was good hanging with Travis.

I realized something while i was there. There are 10 reasons why I DON'T GO TO CLUBS

1. Too old - Man, I'm 38 yrs old. Married. Father of 3...baby on the way. Despite my boyish good looks, I ain't giving you my phone number...and you can't have mine. As much as I like to dance, I don't wanna wake up with sore knees and hamstrings. I can still "scrrrrruuuuuuub the ground" but I chose to use my mean 2 step.

2. Smoke - I hate smokey clubs. I don't want my good clothes smelling like cigars or weed

3. Steppin on my Timbs - For some reason people always wanna walk past me...especially in a close space near the dance floor. And people are always stepping on my Timbs. Sometimes I just move out of the way before they get close to me

4. Deejays - the deejay can make or break a night at the club. If the DJ is wack, it will make for a long night

5. Sunglasses in the club - Most clubs aren't bright...yet you see dudes walking around with shades on in the club. I don't understand that concept. Can somebody explain it to me?

6. VIP - Never understood why dudes strive to get into an even more crammed area

7. The Circle Dance - groups of women (usually 3 or more) dancing in a circle TOGETHER and not dancing with the men in the club. That's corny.

8. Stay thirsty my friends - drinks cost wayyyyyy too much. $8 for a small glass of Henny. $4 for a bottle of water? C'mon son!

9. Bleeding ears - that ringing sensation in your ears from listening to loud music for 3 hrs

10. No clothes...no man - scantly clad dressed women who are trying to find a man. I watch them closely. They strike out every time. Even when they get attention...it's unwanted.

flashback friday vol 1

I was talking to a good friend the other day who's an avid reader of this blog. We've known each other for years. She suggested that I give the readers some insight on the younger version of 12kyle. So I will present to you...FLASHBACK FRIDAY...a series of blogs that reflect on my childhood, college days, or my bachelor days. Not sure if I'll do it every week...but I'll try.

here's a post that I wrote in 2008. Hope you enjoy it.

Year : 1996

Place : South Carolina State University

Time : Senior year

I'm a jokester. I like to play pranks on my friends. I've always been like that. I dunno why but I get a good laugh out of it. Anyway, the victim this time would be one of my best friends and teammates at school...my boy Moe. Me and Moe are tight. We've been hangin' since our freshman year. We have a lot in common. We both played on the football team (both of us were wide receivers), liked the same kinda women, liked the same kinda music, and we were usually hangin together at all times. We're still close to this day. Moe is the godfather to my oldest son. We talk every day. When we were in school, our wives (girlfriends at the time) would joke about how we were like twins.

Moe was a marketing major like me. We had took almost all of our classes together. And we needed to b/c we needed to push each other in the classroom like we did on the football field. One day, we were assigned to do a group project for our international marketing class. Our group consisted of me, Moe, and Marcel. As usual, we waited until the last minute to complete the project. We had a week to get it done but we didn't get started until the night before the project was due. I spoke to Moe earlier in the day and reminded him that we were meeting to do the project that night. Each of us had to do their 1/3 of the work and bring it to the meeting at the library. Well, Moe decides that he wants to go to the Pit (hangout spot just like on A Different World). Moe never shows up. I'm furious! In the back of my mind, I knew that he'd pull some kinda stunt so I was already prepared to cover him.

I advised Marcel that we should get him back. I told him "when Moe calls us on the phone...don't answer. If he asks about the project, tell him that we didn't do it and we're gonna get a F." Well, Moe calls me at 6am. I didn't answer b/c I knew it was him. He called Marcel...no answer. Our class didn't start until 4pm. He wasn't able to get in touch with anybody so he knew what he had to do...he had to do the project by himself. He didn't want to do it but he had no choice. He finally finds me around noon and I told him that we hadn't done anything. I also informed him that the "F" really wasn't gonna hurt the "A" that i had in the class. But he knew that an "F" would hurt his "C" average. LOL.

When we arrive in class at 4, Moe is clearly disgusted with me and Marcel. But he did the whole project. Much to our surprise!!! We told him that we finished it the previous night!!!! If you would've seen the look on his face...priceless. He wanted to kill me. I was on the floor ROLLIN'. "Haaaaaa!!!! I got you! I got you!!" He was clearly pissed but what could he do? We put some of his info with what we had and we got an "A" on the project. I got him good!

My joy was short lived. The next semester (our last) he got me back. We both needed to pass financial management to graduate. I hated the class but I had mad respect for our professor, Dr. Cole. Going into our finals, we both had "C"s and we needed to pass the final exam to graduate. The mere thought of financial management terrified me. This class was the sole reason why i didn't send out any graduation invitations to my relatives b/c I wasn't sure if I was gonna pass the class. And Dr. Cole was one of the toughest professors in the School of Business. Anyway...we took the final exam. I thought that I did well on it. Dr. Cole had advised us that he would post the grades in 2 days. I knew if I didn't pass it, I'd have to come back to school for another semester. I couldn't do that.

I sent Moe to Dr.Cole's office to get the results. I shouldn't have done that. He called me later that day. He told me that I didn't pass the final but he did. I was speechless. I kept thinking..."how am I gonna explain this to my momma?" I was pissed off so I told Moe that I'd call him back. I got off the phone and I told my girl (mrs12) that I had failed. I was crushed. Then...about 5 mins later...the phone rings. It's Moe. I didn't wanna talk to him or anybody else. He says..."tell Kyle that I was just joking...he passed. He's gonna graduate." She told me and I was livid!! Arrrrrrgh! How could you play with my emotions like that?

He got me! I can't front. We still laugh about it to this day.

I've never been a firm believer in following the crowd.

I think you should always be your own man...or woman.

What is the definition of a man? What is the definition of a woman? For some reason, society has adapted the the theory that if you've reached the age of 30 and don't have a husband/wife and kids, then you're somewhat "behind where you should be." That makes no sense to me. Since when did having a spouse and kids make you a man or a woman. While I am grateful to have a spouse and kids, they don't define me. I define me. And YOU define who YOU are...not society.

I've got 5 close homies who are...good dudes, over the age of 30, college educated, have good jobs, attractive and they aren't married and don't have any kids. Should they be "settled down"? I don't think so. That's their choice.

Maybe they aren't ready for it?

Maybe they aren't at that stage in their life?

Maybe that's NOT what they want?

Some people in society will lead you to believe that "something is wrong with them" if they weren't married or have kids. The truth is...marriage ain't for everybody. Some people don't wanna be married. Some people have NO desire to have kids. I respect those who feel that way. Truth be told, there are a ton of parents who have NO business being parents. Those are the ones who should have never had kids. But I digress...

It's even worse for women. I know several women who are great woman...over 30, college educated with multiple degrees, good jobs, attractive, and they are without a husband and kids. Does that mean that they've failed? Does that mean that they are CRAZY? Everybody goes to different things at different times in life. People lose sight of that. There's a time and a place for EVERYTHING. No matter if you're male or female...when you desire a spouse and kids...and you're ready...it'll happen for you.

Don't let society tell you otherwise.

Never underestimate the power of words.

On Friday, I had a conversation with a former co-worker and friend of mine. Prior to our conversation, we had not spoken in about 3 weeks. The last time that we talked, she was about to have her 1st child. I called her to check on her and to find out whether she had a boy or a girl. She told me that days after we spoke, she had a seizure. During the seizure, the oxygen to the baby was cut off. The baby, a little girl, did not survive. My friend almost died. I was shocked to hear the news. I knew that it had not been an easy pregnancy for her. She had some health issues, lost her job, and broke up with the baby's father during the pregnancy. There are no words to console someone who's lost their child. Personally, I hope to never know what that feels like.

Never underestimate the power of a friend

She began to tell me that she "didn't know how she was gonna make it". She was stressed over the lack of money and being unemployed. I advised her to apply for unemployment benefits. Although it's not much, it's something to help. She said that she had become depressed and was facing the possibility of losing her apartment because she couldn't pay the rent. I reminded her that we all go through struggles. Some are bigger than others. We all go through peaks and valleys. My belief in GOD helps me understand that no situation is TOO hard to overcome. I reminded her of that. I won't say that I know every verse in the Bible but I do have a relationship with GOD. I don't try to impose my beliefs on anyone but I believe in GOD and what he can do for us.

Never underestimate the power of prayer

Before we ended our call, I told a few jokes and made her laugh. She sounded much better than she did before. I told her that I'd call her on Monday to check in on her. When we got off the phone, I said a quick prayer for her. It wasn't anything out of the norm. I will pray for my friends...so I did just that. Later that afternoon, my phone rang. It was my friend. I answered the phone and I could hear the excitement in her voice. She had just landed a job that she interviewed for earlier in the week. The new job will allow her to get out of the debt that she's in and will give her a piece of mind. While a new job won't bring back the child that she lost, it's a positive step in the right direction for her.

The moral of this blog is that prayer works. One thing that I've learned that sometimes it's just as important for you to pray for others more than you pray for yourself.

June 7, 1991

I'll remember that day for two reasons...

One reason...Michael Jordan dropped 29 on the Lakers in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

The second reason...I graduated from high school that day. Today marks 20 years. Wow. Time flies. It doesn't feel like it's been that long. As I reflect on that day, I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember seeing my family and friends in the crowd. I remember wanting the graduation to be over as quickly as possible because I was ready to party. More importantly, I remember those classmates who sat in their cap and gowns with me. We were a "different bunch"...to say the least. We weren't a unified class but we had a bunch of great individuals. I had gone to school with most of them since the 7th grade. There were a few who I'd known since I was in the 2nd grade. I woke up that day thinking that graduating from high school was no big deal. My thought process changed later that day. I realized the level of pride and strength that we had. I remember seeing my classmates crying after it was over. I didn't cry. No need for tears. This wasn't my final destination. This was a stepping stone to propel me to the next level. But it was sad because it would be the last time that I would be around this great collection of talented people. You never really knew how much you meant to people...or how much they mean to you...until you part from them. I remember giving hugs and dap to my classmates when it was over. Little did I know that we'd lose 2 classmates before I enrolled in college in August.

Through the years, I've learned more and more about those that stood with me that day. We are a great group of people. We're probably more unified now than we've ever been. That's cool with me. The pride and the strength is still there. And always will be

5 questions NOT to ask a man...

5 Toughest Questions Women Ask

There are five things that women should never, ever ask a guy, according to an
article in an issue of Sassy magazine.

The five questions are:

1 - "What are you thinking?"
2 - "Do you love me?"
3 - "Do I look fat?"
4 - "Do you think she is prettier than me?"
5 - "What would you do if I died?"

What makes these questions so bad is that every one is guaranteed to explode
into a major argument and/or divorce if the man does not answered properly,
which is to say dishonestly. For example:

1 - "What are you thinking?"

The proper answer to this question, of course is,

"I'm sorry if I've been pensive, dear. I was just reflecting on what a warm, wonderful, caring, thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful woman you are and what a lucky guy I am to have met you." Obviously, this statement bears no resemblance what so ever to what the guy was really thinking at the time, which was most likely one of five things:

a - Football
b - Baseball
c - How fat you are.
d - How much prettier she is than you.
e - How he would spend the insurance money if you died.

According to the article, the best answer to this stupid question came
from Al Bundy, of Married With Children, who was asked it by his wife, Peg. "If I wanted you to know," Al said, "I'd be talking instead of thinking."

The other questions also have only one right answer but many wrong answers:

2 - "Do you love me?"

The correct answer to this question is, "Yes." For those guys who feel the need to be more elaborate, you may answer, "Yes, dear." Wrong answers include:

a - I suppose so.
b - Would it make you feel better if I said yes.
c - That depends on what you mean by "love".
d - Does it matter?
e - Who, me?

3 - "Do I look fat?"

Actually I don't think it's humanly possible for me to be pregnant.

However, my wife is. Yes...we are expecting our fourth (and last) child. After churning out 3 block headed boys, we'll be having a girl. The streak is over. LoL

Funny thing is that I didn't know it was the MALE who determined the sex of the baby. Don't blame me...I got a "C" in sex ed in college.

Nevertheless, I ask that you keep us in your prayers. I will admit that it was hard to keep this a secret. LoL. Sharing the news with the few who've known for a while was kinda tricky. It was hard to tell one person. And it was difficult to try to "sneak" and buy 5 cigars for my OCEAN CREW without them noticing. I even had to show a few of my BBM friends a picture of the ultrasound because the didn't believe me. They all know I'ma jokester! LOL. Nevertheless, I'm sharing the news with y'all now. In the process, I found out that 2 of my peeps are pregnant as well. Something in the water? Hahahah

I saw her.

I wasn't looking for her but I saw her.

She looked good, too.

One day last week, I was flipping through the channels and I saw her. There she was...in the middle of a rap video that came out in 2001. As usual, she was featured in a video that showed off her body but the song had nothing to do with the video. Typical for most rap videos. But she had IT.

Nice firm hips...

Toned and tanned legs...

Pressed long hair (or weave...i can't always tell the difference)...

Breasts that were more than a handful...

An azz that was meant for squeezing...lol

Lips that you could kiss all day.

She had IT! She had the kind of body that most men would drool over. In fact, more than a few men HAVE drooled over it. I asked myself..."Man, what is her name?" Who knows? Who cares? Do you see that body?

I really couldn't rememeber her name. She was a video vixen. Some women don't like video vixens. Most men love em. As I watched her dance and gyrate, I asked myself, "Wonder what she's doing now"? I mean, I'm SURE that she's not doing videos anymore. The shelf life for video vixens is not that long. What do you do when your body and face ain't the hottest on the block no more? Do they settle down and look to get married and have kids? Do they try to get into acting? I was once told that "women have it more difficult because they are always comparing themselves (and their bodies) to what they USED to look like." Well I guess that makes it tougher for video vixens who have to "retire".

Do they have a pension plan? What's next for them?

Can they go back to being a "regular chick"?

Relationships are a funny thing when you think about it. Especially when it comes to marriage. You have a man. You have a woman. These two people grew up separately and have lived vastly different lives. They find some commonalities within each other that brings them together. They grow close. Love ensues. Then they decide to spend the rest of their ENTIRE lives together and expect it to work. Sounds perfect, right?

Right!

I'm being funny but you get my point. I was having a conversation with a good female friend of mine and we were discussing marriage. During the conversation, I realized how "different" some of my views were on marriage. These views were shaped by the marriage that I saw crumble right before my eyes. My parents divorced when I was 14. It came as a total shock. One day we were a happy family. The next day, they sat me and my younger brother down to tell us that they were getting a divorce. It hit me like a ton of bricks. They never ARGUED and yet they were splitting up? You don't understand how things are when you're that young. You learn as you get older. I've done a 10 yr bid in this marriage thing. LOL. I've learned some valuable lessons over the years. Marriage is hard. It's work. It's work...even when you don't wanna work. Just like love. Love is the ultimate verb. It's something you DO. Marriage is rewarding, tho. I hear people talk all the time about wanting to get married. There's nothing wrong with that. The question is...do you want to PUT IN THE WORK?? It's like saying..."I want to be in the NFL". But if you're not willing to get your body in shape, then it's all pointless.

My parents had a messy divorce. Dad got married again. Mom is still single. I don't think they were ever the friends that you need to be when they got married. Did they rush into it? I dunno...I wasn't here. I can't say that they hated each other when it was over but there was some extreme dislike. But a funny thing happened some 13 yrs later...they became grandparents. It was then that they had something in common. They went from being distant strangers to grandparents who marveled with pride about their new grandson. I laugh at them now. They talk all of time. Safe to say they are friends now. Last year, they came to my house to celebrate Deion's 5th grade graduation. They actually stayed under the same roof...for the first time in more than 25 yrs.

Friendships should come before marriage. A strong friendship is the foundation. Always keep that in mind.

As for my parents, it came after marriage. And I'm cool with that.

He was merely stating that some people are popular in rap and he didn't understand why because they lack talent/skill. I totally understood him. It got me to thinking. Lil Wayne - not sure when he became heralded as "the best rapper in the game". I still remember him saying "wobbly, wobbly, drop it like it's hot." Wayne is decent but he's extremely lazy as an MC. Best in the game? Shit, he wouldn't make my top 30. Wayne's a rapper. He aint no MC. There's a difference.

Sometimes you gotta open your eyes. You get a better understanding that way. I recently had to visit my oldest son's school to complete my parental mandatory volunteer hours. Deion, age 11, is in middle school and the volunteer hours are a prerequisite for attending his theme school. On this day, I was assigned to help out the in the cafeteria. Simple assignment. I had to help clean the tables once the students had finished eating. This was cool because it allowed me to have a seat on the stage and watch the the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. I found the next 2 hours to be very interesting. I watched as the kids came in. The cool kids. The nerds. The girls. I was within earshot of the kids as they came in. As I played with my blackberry, I listened to some of their conversations. They ranged from being very silly to very serious. I even heard one 8th grade girl say..."He asked me if he could get some." Wow. These kids are different from when I was a youngin.

Or are they?

I mean, it's a typical theme school. A school of kids from middle to upper middle class black families. Not ONE tough kid in the whole school. LOL. Seriously, I don't think one kid (including Deion) could have survived a week at my middle school. Don't get it twisted, Williams Middle School in Florence, SC (my school) could never be confused with NYC or LA but we were tough. There a lotta soft kids here. Maybe it's because their parents are soft? Then it dawned on me. I forgot. I forgot what it was like to be that age. I can't imagine how it feels to be 11, 12, or 13 yrs old right now. I'll be the first to admit that I'm hard on Deion. I want him to be great at whatever he does. I'm hard on him about his grades because he's an 'A' student. You can't bring no 'C' in my house. Deion's the oldest so he has to set the example for his brothers. That said, I realized everything aint easy for him. He's better off than I was at his age. However, it won't be easy. The world ain't easy. He'll have the same peer pressures that I had. Drugs, sex, cigarettes, alcohol will all be there. I told him the other day about how I had to do my research by using something called an "encyclopedia" but he has the Internet. That makes it easier for him.

Technology is great but you can't lose your creativity. Kids don't know how to MAKE up games to play. They'd rather be in front of a tv than to be outside. Nevertheless, Deion is not in an easy world.

Spending time at the school reminded me that I forgot what it feels like to be a kid again. So the next time he makes me mad, maybe I won't yell at him. Or...maybe I will but I won't yell as loud as I normally do...

I know black people.

I know white people.

I have black friends.

I have white friends.

I'm black.

But I guess you may have already known that. I'm always open to a discussion of race. I am selective with whom I get into these discussions because some people can't seem to get pass their own agenda to listen to anyone else. The subject of race came up this week after Sunday night's airing of "The Fab Five", a basketball documentary on the University of Michigan's 5 highly heralded freshman, on ESPN. The documentary covered the lives of the Fab 5...Chris Webber, Jalen Rose (executive producer of the documentary), Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, and Juwan Howard. The piece was impressive and it hit close to home for me because we all graduated in the same high school year (1991). We played different sports but I knew who they were.

During the documentary, the guys were asked their opinions on Duke. It should be noted that the Fab 5 never beat Duke. They lost 2 regular season games and a national championship game to them. When asked about Duke, Jalen Rose said...

"I hated Duke and I hated everything Duke stood for. Schools like Duke didn't recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms,"

Boom! When he said it, twitter exploded. Some were sending tweets of disbelief. Others were sending tweets in agreement. When they asked Jimmy King what he thought of Duke star Grant Hill..."I thought he was a bitch". Jalen also called Duke All American Christan Laettner "an overrated pussy".

Pow! Shots fired.

I will be the first to admit that those were a bad choice of words. Jalen went on to explain that he didn't feel that way today. That was how he felt as an 18 yr old kid. Jalen, a hoopster from the inner city of Detroit, knew that a school like Duke wouldn't recruit him because they don't normally recruit black kids from the inner city...and even fewer that don't come from 2 parent household. Instead of being bitter, he used this as fuel to motivate himself.

Grant Hill took offense to what was said. He took the time to post a BLOG on the NY Times website...

"In his garbled but sweeping comment that Duke recruits only 'black players that were 'Uncle Toms,' Jalen seems to change the usual meaning of those very vitriolic words into his own meaning, i.e., blacks from two-parent, middle-class families. He leaves us all guessing exactly what he believes today. I am beyond fortunate to have two parents who are still working well into their 60s. They received great educations and use them every day. My parents taught me a personal ethic I try to live by and pass on to my children...My teammates at Duke -- all of them, black and white -- were a band of brothers who came together to play at the highest level for the best coach in basketball. I know most of the black players who preceded and followed me at Duke. They all contribute to our tradition of excellence on the court..It is insulting and ignorant to suggest that men like Johnny Dawkins (coach at Stanford), Tommy Amaker (coach at Harvard), Billy King (general manager of the Nets), Tony Lang (coach of the Mitsubishi Diamond Dolphins in Japan), Thomas Hill (small-business owner in Texas), Jeff Capel (former coach at Oklahoma and Virginia Commonwealth), Kenny Blakeney (assistant coach at Harvard), Jay Williams (ESPN analyst), Shane Battier (Memphis Grizzlies) and Chris Duhon (Orlando Magic) ever sold out their race."

I'm a fan of Grant Hill's. Always have been. Always will be. Even when he played at Duke he seemed like a cool brutha. I've always heard great things about him. I mean...he impressed me when he went on David Letterman back in the day and played "Tender Love" on the piano.

Did you REALLY feel the need to respond Grant? C'mon son! Jalen said he felt that way at 18 and you wrote a diatribe like he called you an Uncle Tom yesterday! Please! I'm surprised that you took the bait. I'm not saying that what Jalen said was true. It was a bad choice of words...even for an 18 yr old. As a people, we SHOULD want the best for our kids. Duke is a great school. My best friend graduated from Duke and trust me...she's no elitist. If my sons can go to Duke, then that's where they'll go. HOWEVER, Grant sounded like a sucker. There was no need to defend yourself, your heritage, and your people. Maybe he missed the part where Jalen said he wanted to BE like Grant Hill. I'm beginning to wonder if Grant even watched the documentary. And did you feel the need to "status drop" and let the world know what your former teammates were doing? That's bitchmade right there! Who cares where these guys work?

I'll say this...I don't think Grant Hill is an Uncle Tom. When a BLACK man throws out that term, there is usually two people who get offended...white people (b/c they think you're talking about their friend) and black people who ARE Uncle Toms. Much like the N word, Uncle Tom is not a word that I use nor will you see on this blog. Do Uncle Tom's exist? Hell yeah! I went to school with a few. I've worked with a few. I live in Atlanta and I can throw a rock and hit a few. I just think this was a bit much and it took away from a very good documentary. Grant Hill is mad about something that was THOUGHT 20 yrs ago. I can't even begin to tell you what my thought process was 20 yrs ago. It comes down to this...it ain't what people call you...but it's what you will answer to...

I would remiss if I didn't mention the passing of Mrs. Singleton. She was my boy JFresh's mom. Unfortunately, she left this earth on Saturday. His mom was like a 2nd mom to me. She was my music teacher when I was in the 8th grade. JFresh has no siblings and we've been friends since the age of 6. I spent countless hours at his house growing up. His parents always treated me like a son. All he had was his parents and our crew. Now that they are both gone, we got your back! RIP Mrs Singleton...God Bless your soul

He's cool. Very cool.

He's coming into his own.

For the first time in his life, he has TWO females fighting over him.

They aren't physically fighting over him but they are fighting for his "like" and "attention".

Here's the scenario...He's in class one day and he's chilling. Female #1 passes him a note. She asks him to be her boyfriend. He gladly accepts. He doesn't know what being a boyfriend means but he's cool with it b/c he likes her

A week later, he gets a note from Female #2. She tells him that he "should quit Female #1 so that SHE can be his girlfriend". He likes Female #2 more than he does #1 but he doesn't wanna hurt her feelings. As it turns out, both females were cheerleaders for his rival team. Female #2 stepped her game up by telling him that she "likes the way he dances and she likes his smile." He's flattered.

Before he can make a move, his note was snatched by his teacher.

And the teacher gave ME the note when I picked HIM (my 8yr old son, Kameron) up from school. I asked him to give me his version of the story and I almost crashed the car on our way home. I was laughing inside and trying my best not to laugh at him. It was one of the moments that I was supposed to be coaching/teaching him but I was laughing at the innocence of the moment. I liked girls when I was his age but it wasn't like this. He does it effortlessly. I asked him who did he like and he said he liked Female #2.

Him : She wants to go with me

Me : Go where?

Him : Go out

Me : Go out where?

Him : I dunno *blank stare*

This conversation (or the lackthereof) reminded me that he ain't my lil man no mo. He's growing up.

And these lil girls are growing up fast, too. Maybe too fast!

Is it a holiday for lovers?

Valentine's Day is the holiday for love. Holiday? When did it become a holiday? My first memory of Valentine's came when I was in the 3rd grade. I had to give candy to my classmates (including the dudes) and exchange cards with the girls. Ironically, I had 2 special cards that were gonna go to my 2 Valentines...Catina & Carolyn, who were best friends...LOL.

Back then, Valentine's Day was fun because you would find out the girls in your class who liked you.

Nowadays, Valentine's Day ain't the same.

I mean, there is still a girl in my life who gets a card. And my mom still gets a card.

But society has commercialized the day so much that people who don't have Valentine's are made to feel bad.

Maybe we're just too old now and things ain't what they used to be.

Or maybe...people have turned something that used to be special into a money makin' venture.

Lovers or suckaz? I dunno.
